Passage 1
Shopping habits in the United States have changed greatly in the last quarter of the 20th century. Early in
the 1900s most American towns and cities had a Main Street. Main Street was always in the heart of a
town. This street was 1 on both sides with 2 businesses. Here, shoppers walked into stores to look at all
sorts of merchandise: clothing, furniture, hardware, groceries. 3 , some shops offered 4 . These shops
included drugstores, restaurants, shoe-repair stores, and barber or hairdressing shops. 5 in the 1950s, a
change began to take place. Too many automobiles had crowded into Main Street 6 too few parking
places were 7 shoppers. Because the streets were crowded, merchants began to look with interest at the
open spaces outside the city limits. Open space is what their car-driving customers needed. And open space
is what they got 8 the first shopping centre was built. Shopping centres, or rather malls, 9 as a
collection of small new stores away from crowded city centres. 10 by hundreds of free parking space,
customers were drawn away from 11 areas to outlying malls. And the growing 12 of shopping
centres led 13 to the building of bigger and better stores. By the late 1970s, many shopping malls had
almost developed into small cities themselves. In addition to providing the 14 of one-stop shopping,
malls were transformed into landscaped parks, 15 benches, fountains, and outdoor entertainment.
Passage 2
Marriage is still a popular institution in the United States, but divorce is becoming almost as "popular".
8
Most American people get married, 1 , at the present time, fifty percent of American marriages end in
divorce. However, four out of five divorced people do not 2 single. They get married a second time to 3
partners. Sociologists(社会学家) tell us that in the next century, most American people will marry three 4
four times in one lifetime. Alvin Toffler, an American sociologist, 5 this new social form " serial (连续
的 ) marriages". In his book Future Shock, Toffler gives many reasons for this change in American
marriage. In modern society, 6 lives don't stay the same for very long. Americans 7 change their jobs,
their homes, and their circles of 8 . So the person who was a good husband or wife ten years ago is
sometimes not as good ten years 9 . After some years of marriage, a husband and wife can 10 that
their lives have become very different, and they don't 11 the same interests anymore. For this reason,
Toffler says, people in the twenty first century will not 12 to marry only one person for a 13 lifetime.
They will plan to stay married to one person for perhaps five or ten years, and then marry 14 . Most
Americans will expect to have a "marriage carrier" that 15 three or four marriages.
Passage3
Have you ever been to or passed by fire stations? Fire stations are exciting places for most people.
Under 1 conditions, the great doors are shut, and behind them, the fire-engines wait 2 , brightly
cleaned and lovingly 3 for. But the moment the fire alarm sounds, the huge doors open 4 and the
firemen come and rushed, perhaps sliding down the pole from upstairs. The powerful motors spring to life
and the men 5 on as the fire-engines shoot out and flash down the street, with alarm bells ringing. In
large towns, the firemen are hired on a 6 basis, that is to say, their full-time job is fighting fire and they
have no other work. 7 in many smaller places, the firemen have their own jobs to do, 8 the work of
fighting fires, and they only come to the fire station when they are called. It is not 9 to hear the fire
alarm, and then to see seconds later, men 10 from all parts of the town, in cars, on bikes, on foot, in the
direction of the 11 .
9
But firemen are called out for 12 fighting fires. They are often asked to advise on fire 13 . They are
also called to rescue cats from high trees, to free small boys whose heads have got 14 between iron
railings(栏杆) or save ladies who have 15 got locked in public women's.
