P201: Fundamentals and Practice of Planning

Module 2: History of Planning

Introduction
This module will give the learner a grounding in the history of planning to have a broad
understanding of the evolution of planning ideas starting from hunter, gatherer, farmer
and formation of organized society, Medieval to current Medieval, Renaissance,
Industrial and post industrial cities; as well as origins and growth of cities. The history of
planning will be discussed with respect to their implications to the development of
planning theory and practice of planning.

Learning Objectives
After studying this module, the students should be able to:

1. Describe the historical roots of planning;


2. Determine the social, economic, physical and institutional dimensions of the
history of planning.

1. Topic 1: Historical Roots of Planning


This topic looks at the historical roots of planning into the context in which the idea of
urban planning (town planning) arose and traces the historical strands in the 19th and
20th centuries. This entails a closer look at the problems generated by the evolution of
industrial cities, the early responses of reformers of various stripes, and the contribution
of urban visionaries who sought to radically restructure urban form. Critical historical
episodes and contribution of personalities to city planning: Patrick Geddes, Lewis
Mumford, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, C.A. Doxiadis, Clarence Perry, Peter Hall,
among others; and their influences on contemporary planning.
