Chapter 1 – Drive Applications

Rolling mill Rolling mill drives are always speed controlled. Most of them work
drives both on a constant field area and a field weakening (constant power)
area. Field weakening range may be quite wide, up to 1:3.

curve shows limits for the torque at each speed. Speed control
defines for each speed the torque which is within the area
surrounded by this curve.

Load cycle The load cycle depends on the type of mill. There are mills for one
pass only and mills with several passes per load cycle.

During the rolling the load torque is nearly constant during each
individual pass, first pass is the heaviest and later passes, if any, are
always lighter.

Loads for first passes are normally higher than the rated torque of the
motor.

Control system The control system contains speed control, vector control, and
current controls. A special feature is the load angle limitation for
heaviest loads.

Drive application

Marine propulsion drives are speed or power controlled. Most of

them work both on a constant field area and a field weakening

(constant power) area. The field weakening area is quite narrow,
characteristics
maximally 1:1.5.

Figure. 1- 2 presents a typical speed/torque characteristic curve for a

marine propulsion drive. This curve shows the limits for torque at
each speed. Speed or power control defines for each speed or power
the torque which is within the area surrounded by this curve.

Load cycle The load for marine drives is normally continuous.

Control system Control system contains speed control or power control, vector
control and current controls. Special features are several limiting
functions for supply frequency, generator current and apparent
power, and in manoeuvring (reversing) conditions the reversing
power from propeller to supplying network.

Drive application

Cement and ore mill drives are always speed controlled. Most of
them work on a constant field area only.

1 speed torque at each
speed. Speed
control requires for each load a torque which is within the area
surrounded by this curve.

Load cycle The load for cement and ore mills is nearly constant.

During the working period the load torque is nearly constant but when
starting the mill a 150% load is required in order to get the mill run
after filling.

Control system Control system contains speed control, vector control and current
controls. Special feature is the vector control without rotor position
measurement.

Drive application

Mine winder drives are always speed controlled. They all have to
work on a constant field area because of security reasons.

at each speed. Speed control requires for each load a torque which is

Load cycle The load cycle depends on the mine type.

Control system Control system contains speed control, vector control and current
controls. A special feature is often the redundant controller
construction.
