Acid/Base HW [23

marks]
1a. [1 mark]
A 25.0 c m3 solution of a weak monoprotic acid, HA(aq), is titrated with 0.155 mol d m−3
sodium hydroxide, NaOH(aq), and the following graph is obtained.

Determine the pH at the equivalence point.

9.5
1b. [3 marks]
Explain, using an equation, why the equivalence point is not at pH=7.
HA is a weak acid with a strong base
HA + NaOH  H2O + NaA
1c. [2 marks]
Calculate the concentration of the weak acid before the addition of any NaOH(aq).
The reaction occurs in a 1:1 ratio
Moles of NaOH used = 0.155 x 0.022 = 0.00341 = moles of HA reacted
HA concentration = 0.00341/0.025 = 0.1364 mol dm-3
1d. [3 marks]
Estimate, using data from the graph, the dissociation constant, K a , of the weak acid, HA,
showing your working.
When half the acid has been neutralized the pH of the solution is the same as the K a of the
acid. This happens at 11 cm3, where the pH is about 5.2
Hence, Ka = 10-Ka = 6.31 * 10-6
1e. [1 mark]
Suggest an appropriate indicator for this titration.
Phenolphthalein
1f. [3 marks]
Describe qualitatively the action of an acid-base indicator.
In an acid the large numbers of H ions present shift the equilibrium to the left, so color A is
seen. In an alkali, the large numbers of OH ions present react with H' ions and shift the
equilibrium to the right, so color B is seen.
1g. [2 marks]
Explain what is meant by the term buffer solution.
A buffer solution is one that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or alkali are
added.
1h. [3 marks]
Calculate the pH of a solution prepared by mixing 50.0 c m3 of
0.200 mol d m−3 C H 3 COOH (aq) and 50.0 c m3 of ,0.100 mol d m−3 NaOH (aq) showing your
working.
The amount of acid used is 0 200 x 0.05 = 0.01 moles. The amount of NaOH used is 0. 100 x
0.05 = 0.005 moles. So, half the acid is neutralized, so the concentrations of CH 3COOH
molecules and CH3COO- ions are equal
Hence, Ka= [H+] [CH3COO-] / [CH3COOH]
Ka= 4.76
pH= 4.76

1i. [2 marks]
0.100 mol of ammonia, N H 3, was dissolved in water to make 1.00 d m3 of solution. This
solution has a hydroxide ion concentration of 1.28 ×1 0−3 mol d m−3.
Determine the pH of the solution.
pOH = -log[OH]
= 2.89
pH = 14-2.89
pH = 11.11
1j. [3 marks]
Calculate the base dissociation constant, K b , for ammonia.
Kb= [NH4+] [OH-] / [NH3]
Kb= 1.64 * 10-5
