To the Editor:

In today’s society, one of the most discussed topics is human sex trafficking. Human

trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit. In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud

or physically force victims into selling sex. In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or

manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions. It is a

multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the

world. Sex trafficking affects people of all age groups from newborn babies to elderly. My focus

is on specifically young adult sex trafficking.

A parent’s worst nightmare is waking up or coming home and their child is missing. As a

young adult myself, my parents still worry about my well-being. With everything going on in our

world today, I am also terrified of being a young female adult in this society. I hear of women

my age almost every single day of how they were taken to be sold, found from sex trafficking, or

how they were murdered. It is a very scary and very real problem currently happening and has

only grown to be worse.

There are steps that all of us can take towards ending human sex trafficking. Begin by

educating yourself and spreading awareness of the issue. Make your voice heard in policy by

calling your local representative to advocate for anti-trafficking legislation. Donate to an

organization fighting human trafficking, and keep an eye out for suspicious signs of slavery

around you. Anyone can join in the fight against human trafficking.

Thank you for your support of this letter,
