Verb im Infinitiv - Verb in Infinitive

In German, the infinitive is the dictionary form of the verb.


Typically, an infinitive ends in -en, although a few end in -ln, -rn, or -n.
The infinitive stem is derived by dropping the -en or -n from the
infinitive.

When you conjugate a verb

• 1. You have to know if the verb is weak (regular) or strong


(irregular).
• 2. How? 2 methods:
• 2.1 Look at the list of Irregular Verbs the teacher

• 2.2 use a dictionary

• They do follow a regular pattern
when you conjugate them
• Keep the same stem vowel

1. a) Additional –e
• If the verbstammt ends in –t or –d, then extra –e must be added
to conjugate in the du, er/sie, es and ihr forms.

• If the verbstammt ends in consonant* and –m or –n, then extra –e
must be added to conjugate in the du, er/sie, es and ihr forms.
• Exceptional*: -lm,-ln,-rm,-rn, -nn, -mm, -(vowel)m, wohnen

2. No Additional s Sound

• If the verbstammt ends in –s, -ss, -ß or –z, then no –s added to


conjugate in the du form.

the ending for du is -t, not -st:


-s- i.e. lesen du liest
-ss- i.e. lassen du lässt
-ß- i.e. stoßen du stoßt
-z- i.e. schützen du schützt

3. Infinitives ending in -eln, -ern
If the verb infinitive ends in –ln or –rn :
• sammeln, lächeln, ändern, fördern Achtung!
The e preceding the -ln is dropped in the
first-person singular. All other form retain the e.
