SUMMARY

LESSON #4 - THE OTHER PERFECT INGREDIENT

Okay.. so until now, we've talked about fingerpicking,
fingerpicking and more fingerpicking. But what if I told
you that there's a special sauce involved in giving our
phrases a unique taste?

That ingredient is nothing more than our good ole'

LEGATO! That's the ingredient that'll mix the best with
fingerpicking.

When you see me playing, it's not just arpeggios. Are

arpeggios a part of it? YES, but the legato is what makes
all the difference.

- 1 scale exercise;
- 1 arpeggio plus scale exercise;
- 1 constructed frase based on those two exercises.
There are two ways for you to use legato. The first one is
where you hammer-on the note. You can hammer-on a
note without striking the string with a pick.

See the example below:

Hammer-on
in use.

Guitarists like Greg Howe, Brett Garsed and Allan

Holdsworth use this technique extensively.
So let's get to the first exercise.
The execution will be like the following:

C - B - A - G - A (The note G is played on the next string upwards)

Index finger -> legato -> legato -> middle finger (A note)

Exercise #1

Did you get that?

So practice it in different tempos and rhythmical figures
the same way you have done in the previous days.

Exercise #1
Do it with me!
Cool, huh?

Now let's mix it up a bit. We're gonna use arpeggios +

legato!

Remember the arpeggio expansions from the previous

lesson?

We'll use that along with legato!

See the example below:
Exercício #2
Veja como executar e
treine junto comigo!

Pay attention because this phrase is a bit more

complicated.

From this lesson onwards, things are gonna get more

sophisticated alright?

Like I always say: practice all the exercises in different

tempos and rhythmical figures.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Now that you know what the ingredients and sauces

used to get this super unique sound are, it's time to mix
them all together and build a phrase with them!Let's mix
it all up and you'll see firsthand the result of this
awesome unique sound!
Let's begin with a Dm9 arpeggio and in the middle we'll
put in some scale tones. Notice that it's essentially the
same thing as the previous exercise, with a few extra
notes.Watch the video below to see how to properly
execute it and reposition the hand the right way to go
smoothly from one arpeggio to the other.
