SALAT(PRAYER) IN ISLAM

SUMMARY:
SALAH is the second of the five pillars in the Islamic faith, and obligatory religious duty for
every Muslim. It is a ritual activity of physical, mental and spiritual act of worship that is
observed five times a day. The principle of salah is to ensure Muslims maintain their faith and
devotion to ALLAH (SWT), to increase taqwah (closeness to ALLAH) and to remain conscious of
the importance of faith and submission to their Creator.

In Quran ALLAH Almighty says:

“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, ALLAH is with the
patient.”

Offering SALAH is obligatory on every Muslim. Salah helps to purify the soul, it should be
offered in a precise way as mentioned in Quran and Sunnah. Through prayer we are able to
connect with ALLAH. As PROPHET (PBUH) said:

“When anyone of you stands to pray, he is communicating with his Lord, so let him pay
attention to how he speaks to him.”

SALAH is a ritual worship of high significance because it shows that a person praying five times
a day is the follower of ALLAH Almighty and it also helps a person to get away from all kind of
disgraces and evil. Intention (niyah) has a great importance while offering salah. A prayer is
performed after a call that is ADHAN at a specific time of each Salah. The prayer begins with
Takbir and then consists of several actions which ends with As Salam-o- Alaykum.

Before offering Salah, Muslims perform ablution because it helps to cleanse sins and bad
deeds. Performing ablution five times a day purifies one’s body. While offering Salah Muslims
also should consider that their whole mind and body is dedicated towards Allah Almighty. A
heart and mind should be clear of any irrelevant and evil thoughts because while praying a
person is positioning in front of the Creator.
Muslims pray five times a day and each prayer has its own specific time which is done
according to the chronological changes during the day. The five Prayers are: FAJR, AD-DHUR,
ASR, MAGHRIB and ISHA. Each prayer has different number of rakats either Fardh or Sunnah.

There is also a specific direction to which Muslims face while offering SALAH, it is called Qibla.
Qibla is a direction towards Kabah which has a great significance in the life of a Muslim. Kabah
is a sign of unity of Muslims where worshippers of all over the world are lined facing one
direction. Kabah is important in Hajj too during pilgrimage Muslims perform Tawaf around it
which is obligatory.

Salah teaches us a lesson that no one is greater than Allah Almighty. All Muslims whether rich
or poor, black or white bow before their Creator and prostitute. Praying five times a day
engages the believer in constant remembrance of God and keeps him away from unjust deeds.

“Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all solemnity
and full submissiveness” [surah al-muminoon].
