1
CATENATIVE VERBS

Catenative means chain-like or linking. Ordinary verbs which are followed by non-finite forms of
other ordinary verbs are called catenative. For example:

She likes reading.

Catenative verb + linked – ing form

In this case the non-finite form is the –ing form, one of the
four non-finite forms which catenative verbs link with.

The bare infinitive: I dare say

The to infinitive: I want to say

The –ing form: He started talking

The –ed or –en form: “Don’t get lost,” he said.

The non-finite forms can follow transitive verbs and their objects:

V + O + bare infinitive: I saw him leave.

V + O + to infinitive: He advised me to see a doctor.

V + O + -ing form: They heard the baby crying.

V + O + -ed / -en form: She wants her car repaired before the weekend.
