Sensors
Strip width measurement

View Application/functional description

Function: Continuous detection of the strip width by
means of optical sensor positioning devices
type EVK2-CP
Mechanical design: Construction optionally manufactured from
extruded aluminium profiles or welded steel
construction

Dimensions/weight: Dependent on the size of the frame and place

of installation
Application:
Increasing levels of automation and a growing importance of product quality
demand a continuous detection of the exact strip width in processing lines.

Measuring principle:
The strip width measurement system developed by EMG uses components from
the standard strip guiding range and it consists of a contactless measuring device
and a computer-aided measurement value processing unit.
Detection of the strip edge is conducted on each side of the strip by motorised
sensor positioning devices, which are equipped with high frequency alternating light
sensors (protected against ambient light). If displacements of the strip edges occur
due to strip width changes or strip wander, each measuring unit follows its assigned
strip edge in a position control circuit.
The traversing paths of the adjusting side blocks are continuously measured by a
digital absolute encoder and transmitted to the Universal-MicroController, whereby
the difference in position of the adjusting side blocks is equivalent to the strip width.
Transient deviations of the position of the measuring sensor from the strip edges
during the movement phase are also transmitted to the Universal-MicroController
and taken into account when the strip width is calculated; this ensures that the strip
width is ascertained in an undistorted manner for each operational state.
Contamination of the light emitters is compensated by applying the reference
principle. This involves each measuring unit using a measuring sensor and a
reference sensor directed to the same bright spot of the light emitter. While the
measuring sensor detects the lateral position of the strip edge the reference sensor
measures the background brightness of the bright spot.

Arrangement of the high frequency measuring and reference

photocell on the sensor positioning device
1 Reference photo cell LS14 3 metal strip
2 Measuring photocell LS13 4 HF light emitter (LIH.../ LIH2...../ LIC...)
The elimination of ambient light disturbances through the use of HF light emitters
and selective HF alternating light receivers is of significant importance to the
accuracy of the measurement result. The intensity of the light emitted is regulated
and monitored for any malfunctions.
The installation is parameterised as standard via a keyboard/diagnostics unit
integrated in the Universal-MicroController.

Configuration
Two sensor positioning devices with electrically actuated slides are attached to the frame above the strip. Each slide is equipped with a high
frequency alternating light measuring unit consisting of measuring and reference photocells. In addition there is also a contactless absolute
encoder and positioning magnets. High frequency energised light emitters are located below the strip. The light emitters and the sensor
positioning devices are supplied with power by mains adapters located in an enclosure, which can be mounted to the side of the frame. This
enclosure also contains the evaluation electronics for the high frequency alternating light measuring unit.
The entire measuring frame is completely wired and the measuring equipment has been calibrated and preset. An adjustment device is also
located on the measuring frame to calibrate the strip width measurement.

Universal-MicroController
The Universal-MicroController in 19" plug-in card technology, which is installed in an enclosure together with the power supply unit and the
evaluation electronics for the absolute encoder, calculates the strip width based on the measured values from the high frequency alternating light
measuring unit and the digital value of the absolute encoder, and it transfers this result to the interfaces. The Universal-MicroController also
simultaneously evaluates the monitoring signals for the measuring unit and the message concerning operational readiness or malfunction.
