EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The Comparative study of physical and virtual classes have both advantages and

disadvantages for every student. Going to school and attending classes is important for

every student. School is where they can acquire knowledge from different academic

grounds. Junior high school students spend about 8 hours of learning inside the school

campus. Although virtual/online classes have been implemented due to Covid-19 crisis,

students need to adjust their way of learning. Thus, researchers grab the opportunity to

conduct a research about it.

This study focuses on students preferred way of learning. This study utilizes a

correlational research design among grade 9 students that are enrolled in Ebenezer

Christian Academy Inc. Stratified random sampling technique was used to identify 30

respondents. Survey method was used to collect data from the respondents. Percentage

was used to determine the advantages and disadvantages of virtual/online classes than

face-to-face classes and vice versa; and the respondents preferred way of learning.

The majority of students prefer face-to-face classes over online classes. It is

revealed that face-to-face classes affect more positively the physical and mental health

of students. Also, students perform better during face-to-face classes rather than online

classes for several reasons such as unstable internet connection and lack of devices that

are necessary for the online class. The time they spent in front of their mobile devices

during virtual classes and activities is found to be an unhealthy routine.

CHAPTER I.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Physical Education is "education through the physical". It aims to cultivate

students’ physical competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability

to use these to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of

an active and healthy lifestyle (Bureau, 2020). Online schools have virtual classes that

students can take from home or a library or a coffee shop or anywhere else that has an

Internet connection (Team, 2019). Amidst the covid 19’s pandemic, our department of

education still has ways for us to have classes not in physical, but online classes,

education nowadays are virtually meet. However, other students, mostly the ones who

lack the proper materials are having a bad time in school because they are experiencing

hardship to keep up to new normal schooling. Internet connections, equipment, pressure,

etc. are one of the many more problems of Students. Not only the students are having a

difficult time but also the teachers and staffs to the “new normal” schooling. Some of them

are working from home and some of them are working in school. Because it’s new normal,

both the teachers and staff have to follow the health etiquette on the way to school and

after work. They have to a wear face mask and face shield all day long, and they have to

sanitize their hands always. The outcome is likely to be severe due to the COVID-19

Pandemic.

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Schools has been in this World Since the 17th Century when in April 23 of 1635,

the first school was established in the soon to be United States of America Boston,

Massachusetts. Now as time went by learning standards changed back then a classroom

consisted with only one teacher and students from the Grades one to eight also

punishment was very common back then with the “dunce cap” being the most common

one. Now fast forward to the present, schools are now using the internet to their

advantage and as with COVID 19 ravaging the world, Online Classes and Learning

became the new Normal of schools. Though Online Classes may be a viable replacement

for the traditional Physical Classes, many people especially students still dislike the Idea

of Online Classes.

Online Classes and Learning is a Course Conducted over the Internet, they are

generally conducted through a learning management system, in which students can view

their courses syllabus and Academic Progress, and also communicate with their fellow

students and their teachers (Top Hat’s Glossary). Online Classes are usually taking in

Video Communication Platforms such as Google Meet and Zoom, sometimes you don’t

actually need to be in a Video Call with your Teacher or Peers, you just need to watch a

Video Presentation made by your Teachers. Physical Classes just like the Statement

before is “Education Through the Physical”, Physical Classes are usually taken in

Classrooms and it aim to cultivate students’ physical competence and knowledge.

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 4

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

But then if this System of learning much more Safe than the traditional Physical

Classes, Why is Online Classes still disliked by many people?, Well it all has to with the

fact that it is just too costly for many people due to the fact that so many people lost their

jobs due to the effects of COVID 19, for example the Average Cost of Internet here in the

Philippines is 2,812PHP per Month or roughly 60 USD Per Month(MoneyMax, 2020) that

is enough to buy Groceries for a Family of 4 for a Week not only that but Electronics such

as a PC or Laptop is not supported by the Government or the School meaning that you

also have to support yourself with Electronics that costs about 10 to 15 Thousand Pesos,

Online Classes has been also called as “Ineffective” by some, According to Ilona C. Kritz

(2020), The Philippines was not Ready for Online Classes due to the facts that almost

5000 Public Schools in remote areas nationwide does not have any Electricity yet and

only about 26% of Public Schools are connected to Internet or are able to connect to

Internet.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to understand better the comparison of physical and virtual class during

COVID-19 crisis.

Specifically, this research seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Will distance learning, online and virtual classes, be more advantageous to studies

rather than face-to-face learning?

2. What are the advantages of online learning/classes?

3. Do students prefer online or face-to-face learning/classes?

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The conclusion of the study will significantly benefit to students. It will provide

grade 9 students of Ebenezer Christian Academy Inc. to comprehend the advantages

and disadvantages of online learning and its importance. The difference between online

and face-to-face classes and ways of learning. Thus, students are able to adjust their time

management and schedule. At the end of this study, students will know what their

preferred way of learning is.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study is focused on the comparison of physical and virtual classes. This

research proved data on initial attempt to integrate online modules in a traditional class,

moving toward the model of blended or online instruction. This study helps to identify

these concerns by assessing the positive and negative aspects of online learning from

the perspectives of students, instructors, and tenured faculty. Researchers will do a

survey question to gather the data needed.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Online Class. Is a course conducted over the Internet. They are generally

CHAPTER II.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researcher

considered in strengthening the claim and importance of the present study.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Patricia B. Arinto (January 2013) in keeping with the concept of

ODeL, which yokes together open learning, distance education, and e-learning, in this

chapter I review literature on course design in open and distance learning contexts, as

well as relevant research on online teaching in mixed mode or blended higher education.

Given the focus of the thesis, of particular interest to this literature review are studies on

the experience of teaching online from the perspective of university teachers, including

studies on conceptions of and approaches to teaching online, design for/in online

learning, and practitioner development in teaching online.

The presentation is in four sections. Sections 2.1 and 2.2 review literature that

is relevant to my first research question, namely: What pedagogical perspectives and

priorities underpin the faculty's use of Web tools and resources? Addressing this

question requires: 1) a description of the pedagogical use of Web tools and resources.

and 2) an examination of the pedagogical perspectives and priorities influencing such.

use. For the first task, I review some of the research on types of educational media.

and approaches to teaching with technology.

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 8

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

For the second task, I review studies on the pedagogical factors that higher

education faculty take into account when they teach with technologies. Section 2.3

includes work that is relevant to my second research question, namely, how does their

use of Web-based tools and resources impact the course design practices of these faculty

members? Following Price & Oliver (2007), I conceptualise 'impact' as 'change' and I

review research on how teaching with Web technologies may be changing how faculty

design their courses.

Section 2.4 contains literature related to the third research question, namely, what

are the issues and challenges in developing Web-based courses from the perspective of

these faculty members. The studies reviewed focus on perspectives on the

professional development and support needs of academics who are engaged in online

course design. The chapter is not exhaustive in the sense of covering all of the studies

conducted in these areas. Rather, what is presented is a synthesis of the theoretical

and empirical literature that informs this study's conceptual and analytic framework.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Johnson, (1999) thus, promotive interaction between co-learners is

important for students’ learning from each other in such a way that individuals encourage

and facilitate the efforts of others to complete tasks so they can reach the group’s goals.

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 9

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

The common practices of the CL model do not merely include cooperation, but

additional elements, such as positive interdependence, individual accountability, face-to-

face promotive interaction (FtFPI), social skills, and group processing. All these elements

could together influence the students’ learning outcome and social gains. However, even

with this potential, the factors promoting cooperative interaction in terms of students’

FtFPI as a way of achieving successful CL remain unclear.

LOCAL STUDIES

According to Manuel (2020), Online class is not a new approach in the Philippines.

In fact, even when students are in school, the use of interactive media the way for

entertainment all while picking up on the focus of today’s lesson/s. But with the

coronavirus scare, online classes are being held for the main purpose of safety and

precaution.

If self-quarantine and social distancing are key factors towards lessening the

possibilities of the virus’ transmission, then rest assured both students and teachers are

protected within their homes. Besides, families do not have to worry about their family

members as they can be sure that everyone’s doing alright despite the on-going

schoolwork and discussions being held online.

Due to the nature of online classes—that is, not all students can go online at the

same time—its most likely teachers are more patient than usual. What’s more, some

teachers do not even require a video call, but instead upload files or video clips which

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 10

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

contain the activities to be submitted at a given time period. If there’s one thing we learned

from communication class is that communication itself can be disrupted by any form of

disturbances. Whether it’s a noisy atmosphere, your younger sibling constantly asking for

attention, or the current meme of mothers wanting their children to wash the dishes first

— the kinds of distraction for an online class are endless.

Let’s admit the fact that there really are individuals who could get away with

requirements asked by their professors. If distractions are endless, then so are the

reasons students could raise just to avoid trouble when it comes to submission of

paperwork and activities.

Technology really has gone far with online learning becoming one of the options

to continue interaction between learner and instructor. Still, it comes with the inevitable

balancing that of the advantages. This just paves the way for people to look closely at

different angles of taking up an online class just so it can be better improved in the future.

Whether you choose to participate in an online class, required to do it, or you made a

decision not to — this method of learning should be utilized well to permit an effective

teaching strategy to instructors, and a future towards their learners.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Online education has been studied and embraced at nearly every age level for

decades. Research shows us effective online learning results come from careful

consideration of how learning experiences are designed. Student engagement with the

content, with the instructor, and with peers are critical elements for a good course design.

Most effective course designs effectively involve the learner in both synchronous and

asynchronous components. Asynchronous online components offer anytime/anywhere

learning to the students, whereas, synchronous components are delivered live or in real-

time. Adding synchronous components to online courses can enrich meaningful

interactions. Such engagement gives students opportunities to collaborate with peers and

it allows teachers to clarify concepts and model for students.

RELATIONSHIP OF YOUR PREVIOUS STUDY TO YOUR RESEARCH

BENEFITS

The other modality, classroom teaching, is a well-established instructional medium

in which teaching form and structure have been refined over several centuries. Face-to-

face instruction has several benefits not found in its online counterpart (Xu and Jaggars,

2016).

First, and most importantly, classroom instruction is extremely dynamic. Traditional

class learning provides real-time face-to-face instruction and sparks innovative questions.

It also enables immediate teacher response and more flexible content delivery. Online

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 12

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

instruction dampens the learning procedure because students must reduce their

questions to blurbs, then grant the teacher and classmates time to respond (Salcedo,

2010).

Second, traditional classroom learning is a well-established modality. several

students are against to change and view online instruction negatively. These students

may be technophobes, comfier with sitting in a classroom taking notes than sitting at a

computer captivating data. Other students may value face-to-face relations, pre- and

post-class discussions, communal learning, and organic student-teacher bonding (Roval

and Jordan, 2004).

COST OF BOTH ONLINE AND PHYSICAL CLASSES

Tana Bishop of the University of Maryland University College said that this study

compared how much it cost the university to bid a large undergraduate course in online

versus traditional classroom format. Using an instructor time log, amounts were measured

by the time spent: 1) working with project staff, 2) planning the course, 3) preparing the

course for online delivery, 4) delivering the course, 5) interacting with students, 6)

evaluating student performance, and 7) training and supervising TA's. The findings from

this study showed that the instructor finished more time on the traditional course than the

online (112 hours compared to 107 hours, respectively) and that the overall cost per

student who passes the course is less for online courses ($99) than those face-to-face

($105).

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 13

EDUCATION ON FRAMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL CLASSES AMONG GRADE 9 STUDENTS

ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE CLASS

There are fewer chances of students missing lessons since online classes can be

taken from home or any other places. All lectures and needed materials are provided via

online platforms, so you’ll easily access them from the comfort of your home. You will not

take public transport to get to campus, you won’t have to pay money on gas for your car,

you won’t have to get up early to get dressed for class, the list of conveniences goes on

and on. Comfort is a strong advantage, but it can go both ways. You mustn’t tolerate

yourself to get too comfortable when learning from home, so it would be best to abandon

the couch for few hours a day and set up an encouraging studying environment in your

home. All you need is a large desk and a nice, comfortable chair. Never end the

democracy of the school.

DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE CLASSES

Another key challenge of online classes is internet connectivity. While internet

penetration has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years, in smaller cities and

towns, a reliable connection with decent speed is an obstacle. Without a consistent

internet connection for students or teachers, there can be an absence of continuity in

education for the child. This is disadvantageous to the education process.

Theoretical Framework

To this point, I've defined the student-centered classroom and offered reasons for why it's

more than just a choice for making the online classroom a viable educational option.

In a physical classroom, the students’ needs to be able to see and hear the

other students, have a good view of the whiteboard and their own learning materials.

In a virtual classroom, a student can see and hear the teacher via the

video/audio stream, included video tapes of the live lectures as well as supplemental

material shared by both sections.

As you can see in the diagram, traditional textbook is used for the study of a

subject. People use textbook to learn facts and methods. Library Research, there are a

lot of option that can help you in the library like databases, journals and official

publications. Extracurricular, it is a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the

classroom, offering students to apply academic skills. Culture, it has a great impact the

way children participate in education. It also helps students how to use their own

strength and points of view to contribute in a diverse school environment. Web resources,

there's still nothing as reliable as the web when it comes to school classrooms. Given all

the free website out there, its just one click away to all the information you need.

While newsgroup, unlike e-mail, newsgroups can be read by anyone who view the group

that they are posted in. Problem-solving activities and evaluation: negotiable, its aim is

to find the best solution to the general problem. It is useful to separate the process of

developing options from that of deciding an option is the best solution. But, in order to

plan wisely for what works best in which part of the blended class, we must first

understand the differences—both advantages and disadvantages—between face-to-face

and online components of a program or course.

Researchers compared face-to-face and online learning using a number of

student-reported satisfaction metrics to claim their equivalency. In a physical classroom,

conversation takes place in a restricted setting. In order to draw a decision in a short

period of time, the teacher often leads and guides the focus of the discussion. Since time

is of the essence, answers must normally be formulated quickly. There may be some

discomfort about speaking in front of a class, but there is also the advantage of visual

cues from peers and the teacher.

ENGLISH 9: RESEARCH CLASS A.Y. 2020-2021 17

Students have a better chance of developing well-thought-out, well-researched

discussion answers. The majority of the conversation engagement is mostly carried out

by the students, with the teacher serving as a facilitator and only interjecting when

necessary. The online discussion takes place over a longer period of time than in a typical

classroom (often more than a week), enabling all students in the class to participate and

draw conclusions together.

CHAPTER III.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents a description of the research design, subject of

study/population, variables and measure, research instruments, sampling

technique/design, data collection, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study has using a correlational method of research. Correlational study

attempts to determine the extent of relationship between two or more variables using

statistical data. It helps the researcher establish relationship between two closely

connected variable. This type of research is a nonexperimental research in which the

researcher measures two variable and assesses the statistical relationship with little

or no effort to control extraneous variable. The objective of correlational research is to

explain the relationship between variables and to evaluate the strength of the

relationship. Researchers are comparing the 2 types of learning which are Online

and Physical learning. What kind of education are more effective and more fun

learning. The researchers will make a survey for the Ecai’s grade 9 student’s about

their experiences in online classes and what type of learning do they prefer. The

students are innovating in this new kind of learning because of their first time

experiencing this, for now most students still prefer the physical classes since they

are used to it and because of the bondings with their classmates and teachers.

Sampling Technique/Design

The sampling technique/design used in the study is stratified random sampling in

determining the samples of the study, participants consisting of Grade 9 students of ECAI.

Data Collection

The researchers sent a letter to the grade 9 Junior high school students of ECAI

asking for their permission to be one of the respondents. Once the permission was

granted, the distribution of questionnaires was held right after the permission request from

the researchers.

The participating respondents were chosen based on their age, gender, and grade

level. The researchers presented a letter to the inform each respondent about the study

being conducted. The respondent that gave their permission to the researchers had an

online form questionnaire distributed to them.

Data Analysis

In this section, we will summarized everything we have gathered in the topic

surrounding online classes. So first, from our data is that we have used survey method in

the data collection as for our situation, it is both more sufficient and safer. Second, is the

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

The results showed that every respondent finds find-to-face classes more

accessible, as the teachers can explain the lessons clearly and more elaborately. It also

showed that the respondents perform better during face-to-face classes rather than online

classes for several reasons such as unstable internet connection and lack of electronic

devices that is necessary for online classes.

The results also revealed that face-to face classes affect more positively the

physical and mental health of the respondents.

Advantages of online classes presented are by staying at home, being able to

manage their time and having a flexible schedule to do personal and school activities and

attend to weekly synchronous classes.

On the other hand, Disadvantages of online classes were revealed to include

unstable internet connection resulting to them not able to understand the lessons

properly, and the time they spent in front of their mobile devices during virtual classes

and activities which is found to be an unhealthy routine.

recommendations offered.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

From all the gathered information and survey answers we have collected, here is

a short summarization of every survey. In every form, they always say that face-to-face

learning is just much more superior compare to the virtual learning style, they also like to

put into their answers that face-to-face learning is much better for mental stability and

health. One of the common things we notice in their responses is that face-to-face

learning is much easier than virtual learning because you can ask your peers and

teachers for help with things you don't understand much more freely.

Overall, is that most of their responses were majorly negative on online classes

and want the old traditional style learning method rather than the new and sophisticated

style of learning.

purpose of this study was to determine what students prefer and whether online classes

are more beneficial than face-to-face classes. The majority of students prefer face-to-

face classes over online classes, which leads to the following conclusions. First, they

find it more difficult to learn the lessons taught in the classroom in online classes, and

they prefer to do school activities or group activities in the classroom. Lastly, the online

class has a negative impact on some students who have internet problems, are unable

to concentrate in class due to numerous distractions, and by looking for too long in front

of their mobile devices. The result of this study indicates that face-to-face classes are

more preferred by students, and according to our survey, most students prefer face-to-

face classes because they can focus better, manage their time better, enjoy learning

more, and will not stare at the monitor for too long.
