BATAK TOBA WEDDING CEREMONY

1. Introduction
Marriage is a very strong bond for two people to be one. In Indonesia there is unique wedding
marriage that held by the Batak etnics called Batak Toba Wedding Ceremony. the Batak
Toba wedding ceremony is consist of many procedure and procession. The complex
ceremonial is taking lot of time and money. There’s many thing to include in this event such
as Ulos, the traditonal fabric made by Batak etnics

The Batak Toba Wedding Ceremony being held when there is a Batak couple that want to get
married. The procession itself taking place in the bride house for welcoming the groom. Then
continued with blessing by the priest in the church because Batak Toba believe in christiany.
Usually the couple held the wedding in the big room like Sasana Kriya in the Taman Mini
Indonesia Indah

Every Batak Toba wedding has to be done with the fellow Batak Toba itself. A person who is
not the part of Batak Toba and wants to marry one must get into the Batak Toba society and
becomes the part of Batak Toba. The wedding ceremonial did not only including the bride
and the groom but also their big family. The aunt, uncle, grand dad, grand mother and the
others that be the part of the big family and friend get involved in the wedding.

Because the traditional belief among the Batak Toba is they originate from one ancestor "Si
Raja Batak", with all Margas descended from him. So recognition of blood ties and marriage
ties strengthen rope in everyday life. Mutual help between relatives in world trade and in the
middle of the field of modern city life commonly seen among the Batak people. Tightness of
kinship networks that surround them that gives them tremendous resilience in responding to
the challenges of this century. 

The wedding ceremonial consist of 8 steps. Start by getting the groom and the bride family
member intimate and talking about the wedding plan the continued by many steps and end by
the bride goes to the groom house and warmlny welcomed by the groom family. The unique
thing is each of the step have their own name like the first one is Marhori – Hori Dinding

The reason why out groups choose this event is because the marriage ceremony of batak toba,
have a lot and unique procedures also one of our friends are also from batak toba, so we think
it’s the right time for us to know more about our friends culture, specially in the wedding
ceremony one.

2. Main Part
The ceremonial took so long and lot of moneny starting from choosing brides and groom
until they’re being one. there are each of event and they have their own name and meanings
like Mahori – hori Dinding that means paranak ( the guy ) asking the parboru ( the girl) and
their family getting close. Batak Toba marriage using exogamy rule, they didn’t marry girls
from their marga. They don’t marry girls from the daughter from his father sisters but the
perfect marriage is with the daughter from his uncle or mother brothers.

The Batak Wedding Ceremony start with Marhori – hori Dinding. The groom family come
up to the bride house to talk with her family. They are talking about marrying their daughther,
how many sinamot that they need too give, where and where the event taking place. Second
event is Patua Hata – Marhusip. In this second event, the both family tell the big family their
decision on the Marhori – hori Dinding. The groom family are telling about how many
sinamot that the groom will give and the amount of the Ulos fabric that they asked.
Third, Martumpol is a pre-marital agreement . The brides and the groom signing a agreement
from the HKBP church with the pastor in front of the congregation inside the church.
Martumpol is being held to anticipate the bad things that will happen in the future if the
couple didnt being honest to each other

Marsibuha – buhai the groom picking up the bride in her house. The groom aunt from his
father bring cooked meat on the top of her head inside the bride house. The big family gather
and getting breakfast together.
Pasu – Pasu the blessing by pastor in the church
Adat Na Gok the bride and the groom walk into the stage and the family walk behind them.
After the brides sit, their family and friend congratulate them for being newlywed by giving
them envelopes full of money. then the parent giving their Ulos for the brides. The brides
dancing and by They dancing the family and gues giving them suggestion.
