PROGRAM GUIDELINES
AHRC Nassau welcomes you as a volunteer and hopes that you will find this opportunity to be a wonderful and
rewarding experience. The following is a list of helpful guidelines that we request you follow as a volunteer at AHRC.
Please review this agreement and sign indicating that you acknowledge and are in agreement with these guidelines.
1. As a Volunteer working with Individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, I agree to
follow the guidance of supervisory staff in all AHRC programs/settings. I will confer with staff before
beginning any new projects and obtain permission to bring in my own supplies. Moreover, I will get
appropriate permission to bring in any snack items, as many of the individuals have allergies and may be
prone to choking.
2. As a Volunteer, I understand that I should not be left alone with an individual or student for any reason. I will
always ask to have a staff person with me at all times. There are certain circumstances under which a
volunteer can be left alone with an individual and this exception is determined on an individual basis with the
Program Coordinator of Volunteer Services and program site staff.
3. As a Volunteer, I will not intervene in a crisis situation, (i.e. behavior problems or medical problem). Instead,
I will call a staff person over to assist with the individual and I will move out of the way. If I witness any type
of situation/event that is considered to be abusive and/or a violation of rights to one of AHRC’s individuals, I
will report it immediately to the appropriate personnel (refer to training manual).
4. As a Volunteer, I will treat the individuals at AHRC with respect and dignity, in an age appropriate fashion. I
will respect the rights of all individuals and I will respect the confidentiality of information I may be privileged
to obtain. I will only discuss issues concerning the individuals with pertinent staff and not outside of AHRC.
5. As a Volunteer, I will discuss any concerns I may have with supervisory staff and/or placement(s) with the
Program Coordinator of Volunteer Services.
6. As a Volunteer, I am expected to receive a “double planting” Mantoux (PPD) screening for Tuberculosis.
7. As a Volunteer, I understand that agency policy prohibits me from volunteering on a regular, part-time or
temporary basis within any program where one of my relatives is currently receiving services. Any
exceptions to this policy can only be approved by the Program Coordinator of Volunteer Services and the
Director of the program in question.
(A relative, for the purpose of this policy, is defined as a parent, child, brother, sister, spouse, fiancé,
significant other, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, grandparent, grandchild, and individual for whom a
volunteer has been assigned legal responsibility in a guardianship capacity or such persons that are related
by marriage.)
8. As a Volunteer, I understand that AHRC encourages all volunteers to maintain appropriate relationships with
the individuals receiving services in our programs, during and after volunteer hours. AHRC discourages
Volunteers and individuals from engaging in the following: the exchange of personal contact information,
telephone conversations, trips into the community, email correspondences and conversing on volunteered-
based chat sites. I understand that AHRC Nassau is not legally responsible for the actions or interactions
between individuals and Volunteers during their personal time.
9. As a Volunteer, I understand that AHRC has the authority to terminate an volunteer for any condition, act or
event, including but not limited to unsatisfactory job performance or for any reasons of inappropriate
conduct.
I have read and fully understand the program guidelines listed above. I agree to adhere to these guidelines
while delivering volunteer services here at AHRC Nassau.
