Media art refers to artworks that depend on a technological
component to
function. The term media applies to any communication device used to
transmit
and store information.
By incorporating emerging technologies into their artworks, artists
using new media are constantly redefining the traditional categories of art.
New media concerns are often derived from the telecommunications,
mass media, and digital electronic modes of delivering the artworks involved,
with practices ranging from conceptual to visual art, and performance to
installation.
In this quarter, the modern techniques and trends in photography,
film, print media, digital media and product and industrial design will be
explored.
What is It
In its early stages during the late 19th century, photography was
viewed as a purely technical process, that of recording visible images by
light action on light sensitive materials. In fact, its very name—from the
Greek “photos” (meaning light) and “graphos” (meaning writing)—states this
process literally.
Photography was the most suitable visual form to reflect the
changing face of society. It merged as the visual figuration of a social order
that made representation and subjectivity the cornerstone of its scientific,
political, and economic activities with its ability to capture unlimited scope
that includes diverse subjects, events, and situations.
Photography today has become the most essential task of art because
of its ability to present an entirely new way to inhabit our consciousness
where new relationships to space and time and new categories of thought,
play, and art emerge and develop, twenty-first century photography is
characterized as a continuous process of reshaping visual forms out of given
data through the exploration of the labor of practices that have shaped the
world through mass production, computation, self-replication, and pattern
recognition. In photography, we are able to see how accidental events and
meetings are capable to produce temporary, meaningful assemblages called
“images”.
