Activity 4.1 Situation Analysis

Given the following classroom situations, think of a solution that will help you

as a teacher to understand better your students and how affective targets will help you

improve the situation if not totally solve the problem. Discuss and elaborate your answer.

1. Carlos is an intelligent kid but never makes it to the top ten of his class because of

his attitude towards some of his teachers.

In order for Carlos to be the top-performing student, we need to correct his attitude. As a

teacher, I will talk to him and ask him what is wrong. It is very important to understand our

students so that we can clearly address their problems and provide values.  Maybe Carlos is

having a tough time at home, we must think of a solution to change his attitude towards his

teachers.

After knowing the reason, we need to explain the importance of having a good attitude. The

learners’ attitudes toward academic tasks influence their achievements. Attitude is

associated with what is called the individual’s affective domain, and affect adds a significant

dimension to assessment. If we can alter Carlo’s attitude problem we can say that he will be

one of the top students in his class.

2. Angel a consistent honor student since grade school and active too in extra-curricular

activities.  Then all of a sudden, in high school he became an average performing

student.  It resulted when he found out that there was favoritism. Grades were

adjusted in order for some of his classmates not to be disqualified in being part of the

top section (due to technicalities of grade requirement).

In this situation, the problem isn’t with the student it is within the teacher.  As a teacher, we

should be fair at all cost and serve as the role model of every student.  Creating an

environment that revolves around fairness, trust and respect will give the students a sense of

safeness and trust within the classroom.

Each student must enjoy the same privileges and deserves to be treated fairly. The teacher’s

action isn’t tolerable as it displays the bad side of being a teacher; his/her causes Angel to

become unmotivated. Motivation and involvement of students in learning activities are

affected by students’ attitude toward learning, respect for others, and concern for others.

I will write a letter to her parents and suggests that they file a complaint against the teacher.

If it is proven true then that certain teacher will receive his/her punishment. Assuming that

the school head fired that teacher, we can conclude that Angel’s desire and willingness to

learn will be back.

3. Lorenzo a Grade 8 student never engages himself in class recitation, but his

teachers observed that he knows the lesson and he has something worthwhile to

share most of the time about the lesson.  He will just recite because he was called

and not because he volunteers to participate in the discussions.

I will talk to Lorenzo in private and advise him that he should participate more often. I would

also often give them group activities. In this way Collaborative skills needed to work in small

groups. This also improves their value, social skill, peer relationships, and cooperative skills.

Students will share their ideas in small group discussions and demonstrate that they are able

to negotiate with others and compromise. This will also target concerns like sharing,

Listening, Volunteering ideas and suggestions Supporting and accepting others’ ideas

Taking turns, and Criticizing constructively.
