A History of Science and Technology in the Philippines

By: Olivia C. Caoili
Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. The first concept that I find difficult to understand, is that who among the colonizers brought
the most influential knowledge to the Filipinos to further develop the science and technology
in the Philippines, was it the Spaniards or the Americans?
ii. The second concept that I find difficult to understand is that why the government did not
focus on aiding the problem towards the development of science and technology, where we
could all benefit from it.
iii. The last concept I find difficult is from all the archaeological evidence and trading that
happened during the pre-colonial period, was there a chance that Filipinos actually gained
development from it?

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that science and technology was
a thing that only comes from the knowledge of experts, scientists that contributed to history.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that the process of
development of the world in science and technology had influenced and occurred before and
after the colonization.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that the quality of education
back then was already at its highest level and necessary amenities are provided. However,
reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize many of them are ill-prepared
to provide high-quality education especially in the study of science and engineering, and are
also ill-equipped and lacked amenities such as laboratories, libraries, etc.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that the Philippines became
modernized and developed through the contributions of those people behind the discoveries
related to science and technology. Also, because of their inventions which have been stored
and improved to use nowadays. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize that this history serves as the foundation of knowledge towards the development
of science and technology. That how our country acquires and became centralized to industry,
technology, education, government, and science, is because we adapt and innovate from
within.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. To what extent that the government should critically reexamine the interrelations between
the past and present to be able to maintain the goal of having a well-developed nation
which is known as the critical factor towards continuous development of science and
technology in the Philippines?
ii. Will our country, the Philippines, would be able to become modernized and developed its
status of having science and technology without colonialism?
iii. Is it possible for a nation or country to continues developing even without investing in
education?
