Windmill Project

The Problem:
We have to build a 3D printed house and a wind turbine that will light up
a LED. We only have a budget of $10 for making the windmill and have to
make the house 5 inches long, 3 inches tall, 2 inches deep, 1/8 inch wall
thickness, must have at least 1 door and 1 window, roof with textured to show
shingles, hole on side of home to fit LED wires.
The Research:
Wind turbines work by having wind turn the blades of a turbine around
a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity. The rotor connects
to the generator that speeds up the rotation. The wind's force against the front
side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes
the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to
make electricity.

The Search for the Solution:
Our first idea was to have your typical windmill but we ended up doing
the wind turbine standing up right so on all sides it catches air. We have the
blades oddly curved so that it catches more wind. We will probably have 3
blades.
The Best Solution:
So I think we’ll have the 4 blades and have them further away from the
shaft. We found out that having 3 blades is optimal but more blades help. We
are farther from the shaft so that the blades aren't blocking each other.
The Prototype:
We’ll start at the base first and make the blades later on. We also decided
to make the wind turbine out of wooden sticks because of it’s easy availability
and how lightweight it is.

The Redesign:
One thing we had to do was make the wind turbine shorter because of
how tall it was, so it kept on falling over. The wind turbine was also wobbling, I
believe this because of how weak the wooden sticks we used. We fixed the
height problem when working on the wind turbine, but we need stronger
material if we redo it.
The Summary:
Something we had to do to the wind turbine was to make it shorter
because it was too tall and heavy. Also we had to shorten the connection from
the turbine to the motor because that was too tall as well. We researched a
bunch of wind mills and that one stood out the most so we decided to go for it
because it was different, and that was a mistake. as we built we had to change
a lot of things as we were building. Overall from my experience from doing this
project I would do it again but completely chose a different design and
approach to this whole project.
