Evaluate the Book for the following elements
Style and Language: Using examples for the book, explain the following: Word
choices, dialogue, rhythm, rhyme and sentence length. Share unexpected insights or
interesting information the reader learns from this story. (5 points)
Something I thought was interesting was their choice in which words to make bold.
The words they made bold are either action words like, in and out, jump, grow,
coward, and sticks.

Character: With examples from the book, provide the following- (5 points)
Who is the main character?
How can the reader relate to the character?
Who are the supporting characters?
The main character is the little boy and readers can relate to him whenever they see
their own shadow.
The supporting character is the boys shadow.

Plot: Summarize the major events of the story (6 points)


This story makes it hard to pinpoint any major events. The entire story is about the
boys’ shadow and how it grows tall and shrinks very small and sometimes doesn’t
even appear at all.
Setting: Explain the place and time of this book. (2 points)
Theme: What is the main message of this book? (2 points)
The setting of this book takes place in the boys’ home. There are parts where he is in
his room, in his yard, and in the basement. The main message of this book is that
shadows are always changing and appear different throughout the day.

Illustration: Analyze the book you selected with the following categories
Style (realism, surrealism, expressionism, impressionism, naïve, cartoon art)? (2

The style of the illustrations are cartoon art.

The media choice looks like it could be watercolors or oil paints.

Give examples of describe how the following visual elements are used in the
illustrations: (3)
Line: There are lines going down the walls in the illustration.
Shapes: There are a few different shapes throughout the book. There are circles on
the bed frame, the frames are squares, there are rectangle doors, and a triangle
window.
Color: There is color throughout the entire book and every illustration is full or color.
The color pattern seems to be pastel.
Texture: The texture of the pages seem smooth.
Page design (placement of the illustrations, use of borders, white and dark space and
all pages the same or different). (3)
Each page has a white boarder around the illustrations and the text it either above or
below the illustration box.

At this stage children learn and understand the world through language and mental
images. The shadows of this book can help children gain that mental image and better
understand why they have a shadow.

Your rating of the book: 8

Why?
I think this would be a good book for younger ages. It’s a great way to introduce
shadows in a simple way. I gave it an 8 just because it didn’t catch my attention very
well so I would imagine it would do the same for some children.
