WEEK 5 - CHAPTER 4

Networks, Collaborative Technology, and The Internet of Things

Review Questions
4.1 Network Fundamentals
3. What is the difference between an intranet and an extranet?
 Intranet is used within a company for data access and sharing.(only accessed from
workstations)
 Extranet is a private company owned network that can be logged in via the internet by
stakeholders of a company.E.g suppliers and customers
5. What is the purpose of a modem?
 A modem modulates and demodulates signals for transportations
 Example, modem converts digital signals generated by the computer into analog signals
which can be transmitted over a telephone or cable line
8. Name the two tiers of traffic to which Quality-of-service are applied.
 Prioritized Traffic: frequently used websites and apps are given priority on the network.
 Throttle Traffic: to give frequently used apps priority, other types of traffic need to be
held back (throttled). Also called bottle neck.

4.2 Internet Protocols (IP), APIs and Network Capabilities

3. What is the purpose of an IP address?
 IP address uniquely identifies devices on the network.
 IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer
network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication

6. What is the most current network standard?

 5G usa
 4G+ Fiji

4.3 Mobile Networks and Near-Field Communication

4. Give some examples of VoIP networks.
 Voice over Internet Protocol is a type of hardware and software that enables people to
use the internet to make telephone calls.
 An example is skype, fb video ,viber, WhatsApp

7. What is near-field communication and how is it used in business?

 NFC enables two devices within a close area to transfer data over radio waves.
 NFC can be used to make payments and purchases by simply waving a NFC
smartphone at the pay wave system.
 Used in business to transfer files.

4.4 Collaborative Technologies and the Internet of Things

1. Why has group work become more challenging?
 Group workers can be located in different places or work at different times
 Group members may work for the same or different organizations
 Data, information, or knowledge may be located in many sources that may be external to
the organization

3. How can online brainstorming tools overcome those limits?

 Saves travel expenses
 Can be accessed from anywhere.
 No restrictions on how many sessions a company can afford to hold and when to hold
since its cloud based.
5. What devices do you have that take advantage of the IoT? Describe how they impact the
way that you live and work.
 Security systems- monitor and maintain security of premises and inventory
 Cash registrations- monitor sales and inventory
 Fit bit- monitor calories, individual performance
 TVs – frequently watched shows
 Mobile phones
7. What is the main concern that organizations have about the IoT?

 Data privacy
 Network security
 cost

DISCUSS: Critical Thinking Questions

3. Explain how digital signals are transmitted.

 Switch and routers

 Digital signals are firstly controlled by switches and then passed to routers which acts
as a network provider.
4. Explain the functions of switches and routers.
6. Typically, networks are configured so that downloading is faster than uploading.
Explain why.
 Because most people spend more data on downloading then on uploading.
7. What are the differences between 3G, 4G and 5G networks?
 Speed
 Both support multimedia and broadband (similarity)

15. How can group dynamics improve group work? How can it disrupt what groups might
accomplish?
 Solve free-rider problems
 Disagreements when too many smart students are in one group.

Business Cases
Case 4.2 Business Case: Google Maps API for Business
1. Describe Google Maps API.
Features of Directions and routing (the 4points)

2. Why do you think Google provides free noncommercial use of its Maps API?
 Grab more customers
 Fulfill its social responsibilities as its used by most social organizations

3. How many times have you used a website’s mapping feature for directions or to
calculate distance? How did having a familiar interface improve your experience?

4. Google claims that its Maps API helps a company’s customers and employees make
better business and purchasing decisions by visualizing important information on a
familiar map. Explain how data visualization provides these benefits. Give two
examples in your explanation.

Chapter notes
 Intranet and extranet are both private networks
 Virtual private networks (VPNs) - create encrypted connections to company network.
 Switches acts as a controller
 Routers connects network or acts as a network provider.
 Basic functions of business networks (Figure 4.5 pg107)
 Communication – provides enough capacity for human and machine generated
transmissions
 Search – able to locate data
 Mobility – provides reliable access from any mobile device
 Relationships- manage interactions with customers
 Collaboration- supports team work.

 Prioritized traffic is when certain apps are given priority
 Throttle traffic is whereby some sites need to be held back for the priority sites.
 IP is the way data is sent from one device to another.
 Network protocol 3 basic functions: send data to the correct recipient, physically transmit
data from source to destination, with security protected as needed and receive messages
and send responses to the correct recipient.
 Circuit vs packet switching
 Circuit switching is a method of implementing a telecommunication network between
two networks e.g telephone calls
 Packet switching transfers data or voice in packets
 Example of circuit switching is telephone line
 Packet switching is internet.
 Application program interface (API) – set of functions, commands and protocols used by
programmers to build software for an OS.
 Purpose of API - provides a standard way for different things such as software or
websites to communicate with each other. Video game consoles/Facebook have API.
 Business benefits of API (tech note 4.2)
 Better way to organize IT-promotes innovation
 Promotes innovations- people can solve problems
 Creates path to a lot of apps
 Bluetooth – short range wireless communication
 WiFi- way computers connect to the network
 Types of mobile networks: WAN, WiMAX, LAN, WWAN
 Two components of wireless infrastructure are wireless LAN and WiMAX
 WLAN- uses high frequency radio waves to communicate between computers
 WiMAX- transmits voice, data and video over high frequency radio signals to business,
homes and mobile devices.
 Figure 4.11 pg 115
 Factors to consider when choosing a mobile network solution (Figure 4.13 pg119):
 Simple- easy to use
 Connected- makes the best connections
 Intelligent – works behind the scenes

 Trusted- reliable communication

 Internet of things are devices connected to the internet e.g watches, phones, tv
 Advantages of IoT: organisations gain from:
 Monitor performance, quality and reliability of products
 Support sales
 Better understanding product use
 More effectively deliver post-sales services
 Disadvantages of IoT: concerns
 Network security
 Data privacy
 Cost
 Data collection capabilities
