Introduction
• Coffeehouse, coffee shop or café whatever you may
call, its primary purpose is to serve a good cup of coffee
& they have always served as a place for people to
come together and have a stimulating conversation.
They have long been associated with writers, artists and
intellectuals.

• These coffeehouses have a long history and it has

certainly changed over the years. The first known public
place to serve coffee was in Constantinople ( now
Istanbul ) in 1475. The name of the coffeehouse was Kiva
Han & it served strong, black and unfiltered brew.

• The concept of the coffeehouse travelled with coffee as

its popularity spread throughout Europe. Throughout the
1600s coffeehouses began popping up across Europe
and North America, from London to Vienna and New
York.

• The modern day cafés have turned into small restaurants

that serve a typical menu of diner food along with
varieties of coffee. But even today the purpose of these
cafés remains the same wherein people come together
for a good cup of joy , exchange news & ideas and to
take a break from the daily hustle and bustle. The only
difference is the implementation of Wi-Fi which allows
the café customers to connect to the world virtually.

• As a society, we classify coffee as a small yet significant

luxury. The success of our “café culture” is not only in the
quality of the beverage provided, but also the
experience that our cafés deliver. The practice of
ordering a morning coffee and interacting with café
staff is a momentary distraction from the monotony of
the daily grind. We show loyalty to our favourite café
and will voluntarily walk an extra block to be greeted by
a familiar face who remembers how we like our shot –
provided they brew a good cup of coffee.

• Whether you prefer wide spread chains like Starbucks or

the local independent café, you're taking a step into a
long history of coffee each time you stop for a latte.

Coffee Production in India & Worldwide

• Second only to oil, coffee is the world’s second most traded commodity,
with about half a trillion cups consumed per year. There are two main
commercially grown types of coffee beans: Arabica, which accounts for
70% of the world's coffee, and the Robusta which is far cheaper and
easier to grow. Ethiopia is the geographic home of the Arabica coffee,
the most popular beans worldwide.

• Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer. Brazil has been the highest
global producer of coffee beans for over 150 years. Vietnam is the
second largest coffee producing nation in the world followed by
Colombia.

• India is one of the largest producers of coffee in the world, representing

about 3.5% of the world coffee production (about 6 million of 60kg bags).
The southern & northern eastern states are the prime producers of coffee
beans in India.

• The story goes that an Indian pilgrim to Mecca – known as Baba Budan –
smuggled seven beans back to India from Yemen in 1670 and planted
them in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka. Currently, there are over 52,000
coffee gardens generating employment opportunities to 2.5 million
people.

• Of the total coffee produced in India, about 75 per cent is exported and
25 per cent is consumed domestically. Italy is one of the largest importers
of Indian coffee at 21.63%, which is followed by Germany (9%), Russian
Federation 6.3% and Belgium (5.24%).

Rise of Coffee Culture in India

• India is usually identified as a tea drinking country, but this is being slowly
taken over by coffee as the choice of beverage in some urban centres.

• The entry of Café Coffee Day ( CCD ) in 1996 transformed the coffee
drinking experience in India. CCD trigged a revolution that was followed
by many other café chains such as Barista, Costa Coffee & Starbucks.

• Rising middle class, growing brand awareness, and the availability of

international experiences at home are fuelling the coffee culture in India.
Clean washrooms, conducive sitting spaces & Wi-Fi are active ingredients
contributing to the growth of café chains in the country.

• Working out of a coffee shop is yet another trend that’s taking off in India,
which is why many cafes operating here are transforming into full-fledged
working spaces during the daytime. With coffee houses turning into co-
working hubs for freelancers and startup entrepreneurs, the acceptability
of cafe chains is getting a solid boost across the country.

• An entire menu dedicated to coffee, with interesting bites to go along

and an Instagram worthy ambience & décor have transformed the
coffee-drinking experience in the country.

The Challenge

• The challenge is to design an urban coffee house having a mix of open,

semi-open & closed spaces. The aim of the competition is to design a
new “Hangout” space, a place where people can come together with
friends or family to have a good cup of coffee and discuss anything from
art to politics & global issues and a space which also acts as co-working
space for freelancers.

• The idea is to design a café which has an equal balance of ambience &
aesthetics. We request participants to design spaces keeping in mind 3
kind of customers – For youngsters just willing to hangout over a cup of
coffee, For family gatherings and For freelancers to collaborate & work.

• The café should have a kitchen, closed, semi-open & open seating
spaces ( max. seating capacity of 150 people ), play area for children,
common toilets & parking for staff.

• The proposal should include the planning & the interiors of the café.
Interior details are not required but the proposal should provide a
general idea of the material palette. Participants can add any other
areas such as a small library or an art gallery etc. as per their concept.
