MODULE II – LESSON 3
ACTIVITY # 10
THE GOOD LIFE

Watch and reflect on the film entitled “That Sugar!” (shared material in your
Gclass) where filmmaker Damon Gameau documents the effects of eating supposedly
healthy foods that contain high amounts of sugar.

Answer the following questions to contemplate on the true meaning of the

“Good Life”:

1. What was the purpose of the main character’s experiment in the film? (5
pts)
The truth about sugar is revealed in the Sugar film.
Gameau, the protagonist of the film, is on a journey to change his
diet. He did this for sixty days while on a high-sugar diet,
consulting with ten nutritionists and physicians to monitor the
impact of the high-sugar diet on his otherwise healthy body. Sugar
is a major contributor to obesity, heart disease, kidney failure,
and other illnesses and ailments, as shown by his journey in the
film. It also brought to light how certain firms hid their food items
in supermarkets to make them look tasty and good.

Perhaps the most important purpose of this film is to raise

awareness of the sugar message among those who need it the
most. Also, make the film entertaining and approachable so that
the entire family can enjoy it.

2. What were the steps in the experiment process? What were the effects
of these subsequent steps on his body? (10 pts)
There was a lot of press starting to emerge about sugar's
impact on his body, but the camps were very divided. Toxic and
poisonous were two words used by some. He believed that the
only way to learn the truth about sugar was to conduct an
experiment on himself and document the results. He assembled a
team of doctors, scientists, and nutritionists, all far smarter than
himself, and set about consuming 40 teaspoons of sugar per day,

which is sadly what many Australians between the ages of 19 and
30 do.

3. Was he able to regain his health? How? (10 pts)

His appetite control mechanisms improved as a result of
replacing sugar with healthy fats such as avocado and coconut oil, and
his body regained the ability to feel full and satisfied. Damon Gameau's
health returned to normal within 8 weeks of eliminating sugar from his
diet, which was an interesting finding.

4. How did the main character feel about his bodily change? What were his
realizations about having a “good life”? (15 pts)
Throughout the day, the main character felt calmer, more
balanced, and present. Possibly he realized that having a good life
means achieving all of the good health and other things that lead
to the perfection and self-awareness of human nature and the
enrichment of human life over the course of a lifetime.

5. How does production and consumption of sugar affect your journey

towards the good life? (15 pts)
Sugar subsidies are a major source of contention. This
appears to be done in order for the ignorant masses to consume
high-quality sugar. Without the subsidies, poor quality imported
sugar would have been used, making the journey to a good quality
of life that much more difficult. It also automatically redirects
our path to unhealthy living and predicts that we will become ill
in the future if we consume too much for it. Sugar addiction is not
a route to a better quality of life. In lieu, it's a path to heart
attacks, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, and even cancer. Reduce
your total sugar consumption by avoiding processed foods (which
contain a lot of added sugar) and limiting your intake of starchy
foods (starch is digested into sugar). Sugar cravings will vanish if
you eat more greens, salads, and berries. Stay healthy for us
because that’s the true journey towards our good life.

6. How does unreflective consumption of goods – in this case – sugar, affect

human life? (15 pts)
A lot of the sugar we consume is hidden in foods, and we
are always unaware of its presence. Hidden sugars found in foods
such as low fat yoghurt, cereals, muesli bars, juices, sports
drinks, and various condiments are depicted in the film as the 40
teaspoons per day. As a result, there was a strong possibility that

all of this sugar-eating craziness would be for naught. However, in
my opinion, an excessive intake of sweetened foods and drinks
can lead to a variety of diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart
disease, dental problems, and so on.
