ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

PURPOSE
Your overall task is to analyse a conversation and identify the conversational strategies
being used in the five different parts of such a conversation.

TASK PRE-REQUISITE
To begin the assignment, adhere to these procedures:
1. Record a 15-minute conversation between 3 friends with the following
parameters:
a. Select three friends who speak English.
b. Get them to discuss a topic of their choosing.
c. Tell them that the conversation should not be straightforward but involves
trying to reach a consensus about some issue or problem or choice.
d. Record the 15-minute conversation between the 3 friends.

Alternatively,
e. Record a forum or conversation from the media (online, television,
others) and perform the analysis below on that recording. For media
recordings, there must be at least three people in the forum or
conversation, and it must be in English.
2. Transcribe the conversation, and analyse it according to the task below:

TASK
Write a report of your findings with the following THREE (3) requirements:
a. An introduction to the conversation.
i. Who are the participants?
ii. What is the topic being discussed?

iii. The context of the conversation (time, place, medium). You can
also use an online conversation that is being held on online
meeting services like Google Meet, Zoom, Skype and others.
iv. Length of conversation (time).
(5 marks)

b. Analysis of strategies. Select FIVE (5) instances where a specific


conversation strategy is being utilized in the conversation that you have
recorded. (They may be different strategies or different occurrences of
the same strategy being used more than once).
Report the FIVE (5) occurrences separately. Each report must contain the
following:
i. Transcript of conversation at the point of EACH relevant
occurrence.
ii. Identification of strategy used in the selection.
iii. Your interpretation / explanation of,
1. Why is the strategy used in this occurrence?
2. Was the use of the strategy successful?
3. Why did it succeed or fail?
(5 x 10 marks)

c. A closing note on the conversation. Describe any major pattern in


strategy selection that you see in the conversation.

Note:
1. The report should be fully formatted according to academic standards. This
means,
a. It must be written in formal language
b. It needs to be neatly formatted
c. Each part of your report needs to be labelled clearly.

d. You need to cite any text that you have referred to in a reference list /
section. That is IF you are referring to any texts. Please use the APA
format for your references.
2. Remember to refer to Topics: 7, 8 and 9 of HBET 3403 Module for description
and explanation of the concepts that you will be focussing on in this
assignment: specifically, conversation strategies and related concepts.
3. You must also attach the transcripts of the conversation and the audio file
together with your report when submitting the assignment.
IMPORTANT: transcription for a 15-minute conversation may be very lengthy.
So, you do not need to transcribe the whole conversation. What you need to
do is insert transcriptions of the parts / instances in the conversation where
the strategy you are reporting occurs.
4. Refer to the assignment rubrics as a guide for marks distribution.
