Task 1: You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows the changes, which took place in a coastal area called
Pentland from 1950 to 2007. Write a report for a university lecturer describing
the diagrams below.

Write at least 150 words.

The diagrams highlight the differences in a coastal tower, Pentland, over a

period of 57 years, starting from 1950 to 2007.

Looking overall perspective, it is a significant development that there was a lot

of residential and commercial area constructing in Pentland over the years such as
cinema, shops, park, swimming pool, apartments, houses and yach marina. Also, the
road netwwork was extended in the period.

Beginning in the south-west corner of the land, shops and cinema has been
constructed on previously the area of grasslands. Just to the east of this, grasslands
also were removed to allow for the construction of new shops and houses. The car
park was relocated to make way for apartments just to the north of the shops and the
houses. Moreover, the sea would be the addition of yatch marina, circled by a newly
road, which was linked to the orginal straight road. In the northwest corner of
Pentland, this relocation created a room for park, swimming pool and multi-storey car
park where industrial area used to reside.

Task 2: Some people believe that an armed police force would cause a high level
of violence in the society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In morden society, we are living in the world where the increase of crime is one of the
most alarming issues that gain much attention from public. However, some people
believe that the police in the possession of weapons would level up the violent crimes
in society. I completely disagree with this idea that police force should be entitled to
use guns for the maintenance of peace.

One of the main points to consider is that the gun is essential for a policeman to
handle criminals in emergency situations. When the police meet dangerous crimes,
they could use guns to force a criminal to surrender. It helps them easier to arrest
crime and avoid physical violence. Moreover, if the policeman carry weapons, they
could protect themselves and the society from aggressive individuals. For example,
they could shoot an escaping criminal who create a serious danger to the public.

On the other hand, I can understand the arguments against the policeman should be
equipped with heavy weapons. The main reason for this view is that police could not
how the right way to use the gun which brings a risk of accidents and mistakes. This
would give rise to hurt for an innocent person when this collision can happen in public
place. Besides, the usage of weapons for personal purposes could be difficult to
control by the governments. If armed police force does not have high responsibility
for their actions, they could become the main cause that brings negative effects for the
community.

In conclusion, although the possession of weapons could rise a high level of violence
in the society, I believe that the policeman should be equipped guns to complete their
tasks.
The line graph illustrates how much electricity product was generated from three sources to
provide the city of New York over a period of 20 years starting from 1980.

As can be seen from the graph, it is clearly evident that the patterns of electricity produced
greatly differed over the time frame. While the amount of natural gas and petroleum
witnessed an upward trend, that of coal tends to decrease.

Turning to the details, in 1980, the figure for petroleum registered the highest amount of all
four standing at around 350 million kW hours. This number saw a violent fluctuation from
1985 to 1990 before getting a steep climb of about 720 million kW hours in 2000. A similar
trend could be seen in the amount of electricity produced from natural gas, as it rose
significantly from 100 million kW hours to over 500 million kW hours.

At the beginning of the period, the figure for coal went up slightly just over 300 million kW
hours. After that, a gradual declined could be observed in the quantity of coal, hitting
bottom at modestly around 200 million kW hours in 1990 and then it remained relatively
unchanged at the end of the period.
