When either MAIN or NAV output configured for SIN/COS: 4-wire magnetic bearing drive output with
SIN and COS signals both referenced to RMI DRIVE Z/GROUND, which is grounded.
Voltage: 10.0 Vrms nominal when configured for 10V OBI (King)
7.9 Vrms nominal when configured for 7.9V OBI (Collins)
NOTE
7.9 Vrms may overdrive certain types of Collins equipment. If overdrive occurs, configure for 10 Vrms and
wire two 1K, ¼ watt resistors in a divider configuration to deliver 5 Vrms from the RMI DRIVE X/OBI
DRIVE COS and MAIN RMI DRIVE Y/OBI DRIVE SIN outputs.
The GAD 42 RMI/OBI (also Selected Course) Output is capable of driving only loads of 250 ohm
impedance or greater. This is equivalent to the input impedance of two standard 500 ohm control
transformer inputs. If the combined load is less than 250 ohms, overheating which could eventually lead
to a power supply failure is possible.
For EHSI 74() installations, the 6-wire Plus Analog LRN interface (Figure 4-11) may be desirable for the
following reasons:
• The previously installed long-range navigation system was installed this way.
• The 622-6198-XX2 part numbers of HPU-74 allow the GAD 42 to read SIN/COS selected course from
the HPU-74() and send it to the GPS receiver via ARINC 429 data. This selected course interface is a
certification requirement for installation of GARMIN GPS 155/155XL, GPS 165, and GNC
300/300XL, and is desirable (but not required) for GARMIN 400/500 Series products.
For EHSI 74() installations, the 6-wire LRN interface (Figure 4-12) may be desirable for the following
reasons:
• This is the only option for all part numbers of EHSI 74B.
• It requires fewer wires to install.
The following VOR/ILS CSDB labels are output by the GAD 42 to a Collins EFIS:
In order for GAD 42 to output valid high-speed ARINC 429 data, the following inputs are required:
• GPS ARINC 429 IN

NOTE
Beginning with GAD 42 software version 2.01 500 Series MAIN software version 2.07, and 400 Series
MAIN software version 2.23, the range of NAV RMI/OBI configurations is 0 through 7, and the SEL CRS
DRIVE configuration is 0 or 1. In previous software versions of GAD 42, 500 Series units, 400 Series
units, the range of NAV RMI/OBI configurations is 0 through 3, and the range of SEL CRS DRIVE
configurations is 0 through 3.
NOTE
If using the GAD 42 CONFIG page on a 400/500 Series unit, and you change the GPS/NAV 429 L/H field,
make sure that the 400/500 Series unit is configured to transmit ARINC 429 data for both GPS (on the
MAIN ARINC 429 CONFIG page) and NAV (on the VOR/LOC/GS ARINC 429 CONFIG Page) at the
same speed. If the GAD 42 is configured for a different speed than the 400/500 Series unit, then the two
units will not communicate properly.
NOTE
If the 400/500 Series unit displays a “GAD 42 Needs Service” message, return the GAD 42 unit to
GARMIN for service.
Using a Data Trac, or a similar ARINC 429 data reader, attach the leads to pins 13 & 14 of P421. Do not
disconnect the plug from the GAD 42 when taking the measurement, attach the leads in parallel and read the
data for labels 270 and 271. Set the reader to view 32 bits in the binary mode.
If the GPS is a GNS 430 or GNS 530 and the installation utilizes a remote course selector:
Change the CDI selection to VLOC and tune the VLOC to VOR channel and change the GPS navigation to
“OBS” or “Hold”. Verify that turning the remote course knob results in a change of the HSI selected course
arrow. Verify that the modified selected course is utilized by the GNS 430/530 VOR receiver. Verify that
the GPS selected course does not change.
5.3.3 RMI/OBI Drive Test
Select a direct-to waypoint or activate a flight plan on the GPS unit. Verify that the RMI/HSI bearing
pointer agrees with the bearing (BRG) on the GPS unit. Verify that the bearing remains correct as the
aircraft is taxied in a circle.
