1 DESCRIPTION OF THE
LUBRICATOR ARRANGE-
MENT

1.1 PURPOSE

Placed in Main Section arrangement on the

engine the lubricators are designed to pump the
specified quantity of cylinder lube-oil to the
cylinder liners.

The main purpose is to reduce wear and

corrosion. Furthermore the lube-oil helps to seal
the piston to prevent the loss of compression and
combustion pressure.

For specification of lubrication requirements for

the engine in question please consult the engine
maker.

1.2 DESIGN AND ACCESSORIES

The MAN B&W engine is equipped with a

HJ Lubricator - Manual
number of lubricators, each supplying lube-oil to
one or more cylinders. See marking on the
lubricator for confirmation of the use on your
specific engine. (Marking example in top
drawing on this page).

Drawings of the lubricators and the necessary

diagrams can be seen in the relevant appendices.

The lubricators are installed according to engine

maker's specification and are connected with a
rotary drive to the engine. This drive secures
synchronization with crank shaft movement
thereby allowing timed injection of the cylinder
lube-oil.

A setting gauge (X) for easy adjustment of the

timing can be supplied for engines where
applicable (for use see engine maker's manual).

In addition to the timing the quantity of lube- oil

injected may be automatically regulated by
applying LCD and/or MEP regulation.(See next
page)

The function of the lubricators is monitored by

the applied non-flow and/or low level alarm
devices mounted on the lubricators, see
appendix A of this manual - if applied.

1.4 MANUAL TEXT AND DRAWINGS

When reading the manual please note that the

numbers in the text referring to sketches in
the manual text pages do not correspond to
the actual part numbers. For correct ordering
of spare parts etc.
Please refer to section “Parts list and
drawings”

1.5 INSTALLATION

When connecting the oil inlet tubes of the

lubricators to the cylinder oil supply tank be
careful not to get dirt into the tubes. We also
strongly recommend that a strainer (Y) should be
inserted in order to avoid loose particles from
the oil supply tubes or larger impurities from oil
entering the lubricator as this may prevent the
proper function of the float valve regulating the
oil supply.

Regarding the setting and initial start of the

lubricators see subsection 3.

HJ Lubricator - Manual
- At the first mounting of outlet tubes it is
absolutely necessary that the cutting sleeves
(13) are pre-mounted on the outlet tubes,
using specially designed tools for this
purpose, ordering no. 140085 for ø6 o.d. tubes
and no. 140084 for ø8 o.d. tubes.

- If such precaution is not taken there is a

serious risk that the valve block (27) may be
damaged and that the joints will not be tight,
resulting in oil waste and less lubrication.

The union nuts (12) for the outlet pipes can be

tightened and loosened by means of standard Pre-mounting tools order no.140084 for ø8
tools. order no. 140085 for ø6

The operation can, however, be considerably

facilitated by using our specially designed keys,
part no. 140126 for ø6 o.d. tubes and part no. Key order no.207708 for ø8
207708 for ø8 o.d. tubes.

The wires for the electric heating elements and

the alarm devices are best assembled in a
junction box. Connect them to the ship's
electrical systems. See wiring diagrams among Key order no. 140126 for ø6

the enclosed drawings.

2 DESCRIPTION OF
LUBRICATORS

The lubricators are connected to supply from the

cylinder oil supply tank. A float valve (5)
secures an oil level in the lubricator container of
approx. 70 to 110mm above the upper edge of
the pump block (25). It may be surveyed visually
by looking at the level float (42) in the level bore
in the survey block.

Oil is sucked from inside the container (4)

through a double suction valve (71 + 72) into the
chamber in front of the pump piston (70). When
the cam activates the pump piston, the oil is
pressed through the double pressure valve (71 +
72) and into the ball control bore of the survey
block (23).

Passing through the survey block (23) the oil-

flow presses the indicator ball (22) upwards (see
also subsection 3.5). This ball will register the
flow by its position in the conical bore. The oil

HJ Lubricator - Manual
leaves the lubricator through the nonreturn valve
(19).

The oil quantity pumped is proportional to the

lubricator cam shaft (11) revolving speed and
the stroke (one pump stroke per revolution); it is
also a function of the pump piston diameter.

For determining correct stroke consult the

engine maker's specification of guiding feed rate
for the engine in question.

When setting the stroke please refer to

subsection 3.4 and if LCD and/or MEP
regulation is applied also to appendices D and E.

3 FURTHER DESCRIPTION
OF LUBRICATORS

3.1 HOW TO BLEED, START AND

USE THE LUBRICATOR

Make sure that the oil supply has been

established and that it is open.

Unscrew the bleed screws (69) and pump the

adjusting bolts (15) manually until the air has
been removed (i.e. oil free from air is flowing
through the bleed screw holes when pumping the
adjusting bolts). Then keep the adjusting bolt in
its inner position while re-inserting and
tightening the bleed screw.

If the lubricator is in a position where manual

pumping is difficult because the cam shaft
presses on the pistons, you can turn the engine
with the engine turning gear in order to release
the pistons.

HJ Lubricator - Manual
Priming is recommended by some engine
manufacturers and can be done by pumping the
adjusting bolts (15) until sufficient oil has been
supplied.

Prime the system carefully before the first start

of the engine and after disassembly of an engine
cylinder - if specified by the engine
builder/designer.

Following a long standstill it may happen that

the pumps will not draw oil due to air
accumulation in the pumps. In that case refer to
the second paragraph on this page: "Unscrew the
bleed screws...".

3.2 WARNING

- Generally it should be avoided touching the

movable parts of the lubricators during
operation, as this may cause personal injuries
or damage to parts.

- Do not open the lubricator during

operation.

- Do not try to demount the float valve during

operation, as a loose float valve in an
operating lubricator most likely will result in
severe damage.

3.3 LUBE-OIL OUTPUT, CONTROL

The flow bores have been made as conical bores,

but with a cylindrical bore at the bottom so the
balls will position themselves at the step to the
conical part of the bore or with more flow at a
higher level.

HJ Lubricator - Manual
The function of the lubricator can be observed
by looking at the balls in the flow bores. They
will, dependent on the quantity and the viscosity
of the oil flow, be positioned at a certain and
even level in the bores - if the same setting of
the adjusting bolt is applied.

A measuring of cylinder oil consumption can

be made as follows:

Disconnect the oil supply to the

lubricator and measure the time of the
consumption of oil between two or
more of the red lines behind the level
bore for oil quantity in the lubricator
(see also enclosed drawing: ”Litre
content in HJ type 7 lubricator”).

3.4 ADJUSTMENT OF OUTPUT

Oil supply is proportional to the stroke setting in

the lubricator and the revolutions of the cam
shaft. (See drwg. 80... "Adjustment of cylinder
oil consumption").

The basic setting of stroke must be carried out

with the handle for joint quantity adjustment in
position minus (-) or LCD-regulation (if applied)
locked in position zero. See appendix D.

The adjustment of the oil quantity for the

individual lube-points (cc/pump stroke) is
carried out through the adjustment of the strokes
of the pump pistons by means of the adjusting
bolts (15).

The pump stroke may be adjusted individually

from 0 to 7mm at intervals of 0.125mm, which
corresponds to 1/4 turn of the adjusting bolts
(15).

Loosen the key screws (64) above the adjusting

HJ Lubricator - Manual
bolts (15) when adjusting the stroke of the
pump pistons. Then turn the adjusting bolts
clockwise for a decrease of stroke or
counter-clockwise for an increase of stroke.
Tighten the key screws (64) again afterwards.

Actual pump piston diameter can be seen on the

front page of this manual, piston sizes are as
standard between 2.5 and 7.0mm in diameter.
Size selection in steps of 0.5mm.

Volumetric efficiency of the lubricator at normal

operation is approx. 0.9 at an oil temperature of
approx. 45°C and an oil viscosity of 100-150cst.

s =
pump stroke in lubricator in mm.
d =
piston diameter in mm in lubricator
n =
lubricator revolutions per minute.
K =
total number of active oil outlets on
all lubricators.
BHP = engine BHP when lubricators run n
revolutions.
g/BHPh = specific consumption
0 = volumetric efficiency of lubricator

The formula includes specific gravity of the

lube-oil 945g/litre. 0 is of course depending on
several factors including oil viscosity (see also
subsection 3.7), lubricator r.p.m., and counter
pressure at outlet. During normal DE operating
conditions the efficiency is 0.9 or above using an
oil with viscosity 220cSt (SAE 50 at 40°C) and
lubricator revolutions not exceeding 130 r.p.m.

In the function range the efficiency is typically

0.95 or more under conditions as described

HJ Lubricator - Manual
above in lubricators which are clean, well bleed,
an equipped with heating elements to ensure
against temperatures below 40°C.

Formula for calculating actual lube-oil output

per lube-point based on actual measured stroke -
the formula may of course also be used for
calculating required stroke:

q = output required (cc/pump stroke)

d = piston diameter in mm in lubricator
(see front page of manual)
s = pump stroke in mm
0 = volumetric efficiency of lubricator

Determination of the pump piston stroke is

most easily carried out and confirmed in the
following way:

You get zero stroke when the adjusting bolt head

(15) is screwed against the valve block.

2004.09.03/RC/--/MO (900005) www.hjlubri.dk HJ LUBRICATOR - Page 9

Smedevænget 3 Fax: +45 98 57 13 87
DK-9560 Hadsund E-mail: hjl@hjlubri.dk

Then turn the adjusting bolt counter-clockwise

the number of revolutions necessary to give the
desired stroke. Turn the adjusting bolt 2
revolutions to give a stroke change of 1mm.

The movement of the piston may be measured

during operation with a slide gauge while
exerting a slight pressure on

the adjusting bolt head so that the adjusting bolt

constantly touches the arm (8) without over-
coming the power from the piston spring.- This
movement of the adjusting bolt is the same as
the pump piston stroke.

Please note that during running-in of the

lubricators the adjusted stroke may increase
slightly.

3.5 HANDLE FOR JOINT

QUANTITY ADJUSTMENT
FOR TEMPORARY INCREASE OF
LUBE-OIL CONSUMPTION

HJ Lubricator - Manual
This section is only relevant if the lubricator is
not equipped with LCD regulation. If it is
equipped with LCD-regulation refer to appendix
D.

The handle for joint quantity adjustment

regulates the stroke of all pumps in the
lubricator at the same time.

The handle is used when temporarily there is a

need for increased dosage e.g. during
manoevering or during running-in of piston
rings and liners.
Handle for joint quantity adjustment

It consists of an eccentrically suspended shaft

with a handle which moves all the rocker arms
towards the back of the lubricator at the same
time. In this way the distance between the
adjusting bolts and the rocker arms is increased
resulting in a stroke regulation for all pumps.

During normal operation the handle must be in

lock hole minus (-). The pump stroke adjustment
from one hole to the next is 1.5mm. If the handle

is moved to lock hole plus (+) the stroke

increase will be approx. 6mm.

3.6 SURVEY BLOCK

The survey block (23) is made of PMMA with a

row of conical bores, one for each pump, each
containing a stainless steel ball (22).

The ball (22) will, dependent on the quantity and

the viscosity of the oil flow, be positioned at a
certain level in the conical bore, moving slightly
with the pump strokes.

A look at the survey block gives easy

confirmation of the operation of the lubricator
(see subsection 2).

When mounting remember to place the

survey block with the largest diameter bore
turned upwards. If not, the survey block will
crack when the lubricator is started, and no
oil will be supplied to the lube-points, which
may result in severe damage.

HJ Lubricator - Manual
3.7 ELECTRIC HEATING UNIT

The lubricator is designed for possible mounting

of an electric heating unit (Z) which is capable
of keeping the oil temperature at approx. 40-
50°C, or approx. 20°C above surrounding
temperature.

Heating facilitates, among other things, help the

expulsion of dissolved air from the oil and in
this way assists in maintaining the correct
function of the lubricator.

So we strongly recommend the mounting of

the electric heating unit (Z).

Connect it to a one-phase voltage source. The

values for voltage (V), output (W) and length of
the heating element (B) are stamped on the
cover of the heater junction box.

If de-mounting the electric heating unit (Z) turn

off the power beforehand to avoid electric

shock, burns or ignition of inflammable

material.

3.8 ENTRY INTO SERVICE AND

MAINTENANCE

1. At delivery, the lubricators and other

equipment are rustproof. The rust
preventive can be removed with for
example kerosene or turpentine. If the
rust preventive is removed, please
ensure that untreated surfaces are
rust prevented again.

2. If you want to clean the surveyblock

from the rust preventive, please note
that some agents are not applicable as
they may damage the survey block,
see list under point 9.

3. Keep gaskets for the survey blocks,

tubes and joints between the lubricators
and the lube points of the diesel engine
cylinders tight - otherwise oil supply to
the wearing surfaces between the

HJ Lubricator - Manual
cylinders and the pistonrings is
reduced.

4. Keep also the other gaskets in the

lubricator tight to avoid oil leaks.

5. Re-tighten the screws in the lubricator

within the first three months or 2,000
operation hours.

6. Remove the strainer in the filling tubes

for cleaning or changing at suitable
intervals.

7. Disassemble the lubricators once a year

or at suitable intervals:

Clean the container of sludge,

Remove and clean the valves,

Blow through tubes

Clean the ball control bores.

A ALARM DEVICES
HJ TYPE 17F001

The lubritron device (P01) consists of one unit

or more per lubricator mounted with sensors
behind the survey block (P23).

A.1 Purpose
The purpose is to give signal in case of zero
flow and/or low level in the lubricator. (See
subsection A.3)

A.2 Function
Each unit is fitted with 2 sensors (X and Y)
fitting into corresponding holes at the bottom
of the flow control bore and of the level bore
respectively.

If the lubricator is equipped with more than

one alarm unit, only one unit will monitor both
flow and level. The other unit(s) will monitor
flow with both sensors.

In the level bore a float (P42) follows the oil

Appendix A - Alarm device

level in the lubricator container. This float is at
its lower end fitted with a stainless steel tube.
At the lowest permissible oil level the float
comes to a rest at the bottom of the level bore
and the steel tube will be opposite the sensor
(X).

In that case relay contact A (see A.3) will open

and cause an alarm. As an extra warning signal
a red light emitting diode (LED) on the alarm
device will emit light. See further information
later in the text.

If contact A opens due to failing oil supply to

the lubricator (low level signal), there will
normally be sufficient time to restore the oil
supply before the level has dropped so much
that the pumps will suck air and then stop their
operation.

If the oil flow stops in the ball controlbore

with the alarm device, the stainless steel ball
(P22) will come to a rest at the bottom directly
in front of the alarm sensor (Y).

(Patented)

The relay contact B (see A.3) will then close

and cause an alarm. As an extra warning signal
a red LED on the alarm device will emit light.

In case of a signal from the LEDs or alarms

caused by contacts A or B when the engine
is running the cause must be found and
corrected at once.

Note:

a) The LEDs are also used for monitoring the

internal functions of the alarm device. This
means that an error on sensors or the inter-
nal circuit will cause the relevant LED to
emit light, on condition that there is power
supply and that the LEDs are functional.

b) The LED for flow will be lit at every engi-

ne standstill.

A.3 Electrical connections

Contacts in diagram are shown with power
supply on and in failure positions: low level

Appendix A - Alarm device

and zero flow.

As it appears from the diagram, both contact A

and contact B form part of steady feeble cur-
rent circuits.

Sensor circuit and contact circuit for A and B

are completely galvanically separated.

The system requires a supply voltage of 24V

DC ±20%. Max. power consumption: 100mA
per lubritron - In case of supply voltage drop
out, both contact A and contact B will open,
and the LEDs will not emit light.

Warning: It must be stressed that the max.

limits 10W/100V/300mA with ohmic load
must not be exceeded.

A.4 Alternative use of the alarm device.

The alarm device is prepared for use as desc-

ribed above, but if system requirements have
been changed its use may be altered according
to need.

Circuit type
Each sensor can, according to need, be used in:

a steady feeble current circuit,

a working current circuit, or

both of the above.

See diagram for contact types. Contacts in

diagram are shown with power supply on and
in failure positions: low level and zero flow.
To change use, alteration in wiring is neces-
sary.

Sensor correspondence
On alarm devices with two sensors it may be

Appendix A - Alarm device

desirable that both circuits indicate an error at
the same time, even if only one alarm situation
has been detected.

In that case, correspondence between sensors

can be established. With such a combination
both LEDs will emit light when an error occurs
in either circuit.

To establish correspondence demount the plug

(P25) for the jumper-house. Connect the two
pin heads (P26) under the plug by mounting
the correspondence jumper (P27). Now corre-
spondence between the two sensors has been
established.

To terminate the correspondence between the

sensors disconnect the two pin heads (P26) by
demounting the correspondence jumper (P27).

A.5. Exchange of the lubritron device

This section is only relevant if the lubricator is

equipped with exchange facilities.(i.e. if cover
(P32) is mounted).

1. Unscrew the leads from the terminals in the

junction box and remove the lubritron cable
(P31) from the box.

2. De-mount the cover (P32) from the lubrica-

tor container (P33) by unscrewing the screws
(P34).

3. De-mount the lubritron cable (P31) from the

cable gland (P35) on the lubricator.

4. Unscrew the three screws (P36) which keep

the lubritron in position at the back of the
survey block (P23).

5. Remove the lubritron (P01) carefully from

the survey block (P23) through the opening

Appendix A - Alarm device

where the cover has been re-moved.

6. Put the new lubriton (P01) carefully in its

proper place.

7. Mount the screws (P36) loosely, ensure that

the sensors (X and Y) of the lubritron catch the
right holes in the survey block. Tighten the
screws (P36) lightly, otherwise damage may
occur.

8. Draw the lubritron cable (P31) through the

cable gland (P35) on the cover.

9. Re-mount the cover (P32) with the screws

(P34)

10. Re-connect the leads of the lubritron cable

(P31) in the junction box.

Ensure that the leads are connected to the right

terminals - otherwise damage may occur.

1. DESCRIPTION OF LCD
REGULATION

1.1 PURPOSE

According to MAN B&W SL91-282:

"MAN B&W has decided to introduce this

Load Change Dependent system as
standard on all new installations ordered
from the middle of 1991."

because:

"Observations from a number of vessels

with cylinder wear rates above the average
show that the automatic increase of oil at
start and load changes has reduced the
wear rates."

"As the system is relatively easy to install

on engines in service, it is recommended to

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

consider installing the system also on
plants already in service."

1.2 DESIGN

Lubricators equipped for LCD regulation

of the cylinder lube oil quantity are fitted
with a pneumatic actuator for automatic
stroke adjustment. Apart from this a
control system controlling the actuators is
required, e.g. HJ pick-up, control box and
solenoid valve or other equipment intended
for the same function.

Securing automatically increased lubri-

cation during load changes the system
improves the operating and wear
conditions of the cylinder liners and piston
rings. The system, however, also permits
one or more lubricators to be locked in a
position for continued increased
lubrication while the remaining ones are
operating automatically.

The LCD system is outlined in the

drawings:

101432 shows the connections between

the actuator and the solenoid valve.
805154 and 805155 shows the actuator.

1.3 FUNCTION

Changes in the position of the fuel

regulation shaft reflect load changes.

If the position change of the fuel regulation

shaft is smaller than the pre-set reference,
no lubrication adjustment is made.

If the position change is larger than the

pre-set reference value, lubrication is
increased as the control device (2)
switches on the power to the solenoid
valve [3] thus changing the direction of the

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

compressed air to the actuator [4]. The
actuator turns the eccentric shaft in the
lubricator. This will cause the stroke to be
increased by a fixed amount on all pumps
in the lubricator. Recommended setting
3mm.

It is possible to set the stroke increase to

other values: approx. 1.5, 4.5 or 6mm. See
subsections 2.1 and 2.2 for further
information about this possibility.

Utility model protected

When the period of increased lubrication is

over, power to the solenoid valve [3] is
switched off, which then changes the
direction of the compressed air. Thereby
the stroke in the lubricator is returned to
the basic setting.

WARNING:
- For safety reasons do not open the
actuator while in operation. Generally
avoid getting in contact with the
movable parts of the system and do not
expose the components inside to direct
contact with liquids.

- If the lubricator is also equipped with

MEP regulation the connection from
the fuel regulation shaft to the MEP
regulation cover may be at the same
side of the lubricator as the actuator. Be
careful not to get your fingers or tools
caught between the drive for the MEP
regulation and the locking arms of the

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

Turn the inner arm (B) to position 0
(zero) and lock it (recommended
position).

4. Turn the outer arm (A) to position

3 and lock it (recommended
position).

5. Turn on the air supply at the ball

valve.

The actuator(s) now operates according to

the Load Change principle.

If you want to change the automatic LCD

stroke adjustment from 3 to approx. 1.5,
4.5 or 6mm, follow the instructions given
above except for point 4, which in that
case should read: Turn arm (A) to position
1.5, 4.5 or 6.

One or more lubricators may be run at

increased setting, at the same time as
continuing the automatic load change
function.

1. Disconnect the air supply at the ball

valve.

2. Turn the inner arm (B) to the

required increase of setting, and
lock it.

3. Turn the outer arm (A) to a position

which gives the required stroke
increase at load change, and lock it.

Stroke increase at load change is the

difference between the setting of arm (A)
and arm (B).

Example:
Arm (B): 1.5mm
Arm (A): 4.5mm

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

Increase in basic setting: 1.5mm
approx.
Increase in stroke at load change:
4.5-1.5 = 3mm approx.

The operation of the lubricator may be

checked by observing the position
indicator (6).

2.2 MANUAL MODE - LOCKING

OF THE ACTUATORS

See drwg. 805154 and/or 805155.

The actuators may, when needed, be locked

in positions of increased lubrication, e.g.
during running-in of new cylinder liners,
pistons or piston rings. The actuators are
locked independently for increases in stroke
of +0mm, +1.5mm, +3.0mm, +4.5mm or
+6.0mm approx. The other lubricators may
still be operated automatically by the LCD
regulation.

1. Disconnect the air supply at the ball

valve.

2. Turn the two arms to the same red

field in the required position, and
lock them. (Note: Red on actuator =
grey in drawing).

Appendix D - Load Change regulation

3. Turn on the air supply at the ball
valve. The actuator(s) locked in this
way is not affected by the automatic
LCD function of the other actuators.

The operation of the lubricator may be

checked by observing the position indicator
(6).
