Archetype/Pride and Prejudice/Jane Austen/Innocent/Wise/Hero/Marriage

There are many archetypes in Pride and Prejudice like marriage, the villain, the wise old man,
the hero, the damsel in distress, and the innocent. To start off I will talk about my least favorite
archetype, why this is my least favorite has to do with the character herself, Lydia. I see Lydia
as the innocent archetype, Lydia proves herself innocent in many instances throughout the
book. To begin with, her obsession with soldiers (gross). Lydia is basically in love with every
soldier that looks her way or talks to her. Even if they have no real interest in her, she thinks
they really do. Here's the real kicker at what makes Lydia so, so innocent. Lydia is so innocent,
dare I say stupid, that she marries “The Villain” Mr. Wickham. I shall not go into details, but all
you need to know is that Mr. Wickham is a very untrustworthy, conniving fool. Despite all these
characteristics of the lovely Mr. Wickham (note the sarcasm) Lydia being the little 16-year-old
she is, she decides to elope with him without her parents’ knowledge. Her parents and sisters
(except for one) had no idea that Lydia and Mr. Wickham were even together. I will go in more
depth about their elopement whilst I talk about the hero.

Next up we have the lovely wise old man, Mr. Bennet. Mr. Bennet is the father of Elizabeth, the
protagonist, and many times throughout the book he proves to be quite the wise old owl. To be
fair he can be quite annoying at times, but that is a topic for another day. He doesn't say a lot,
but when he does prepare to be blown away with his wise words. I mean I'm not blown away,
but his daughters and other people in the book definitely are. Mr. Bennet tells Elizabeth if she
marries Mr. Collins, he will never speak to her again, which I love because the mom is so
adamant on Lizzy marrying that man, but the father is like “No, don’t, if you do, I will never talk
to you again”. It’s just fabulous. I really like his character because he doesn’t force his daughters
to do things they don’t want to do, like getting married, he doesn’t care. That is all I have to say
about our dear, old, and wise fellow. Since he says so little, he can't expect me to say much.

I’ll kill two birds with this stone, as to not bore you all, and talk about the hero and the damsel in
distress in one go. You're welcome, hold your applause. Our hero, Mr. Darcy, is the reason why
Lydia and Mr. Wickham got married. Now, I know you must be saying, but Emma, I thought you
hated Lydia, Mr. Wickham and their marriage. You would be correct; I do dislike them. However,
in the beginning when Mr. Wickham somehow convinced our innocent little Lydia to go away
with him, he did not plan on marrying her and basically just wanted to ruin her and her family.
So, the lovely Mr. Darcy found Mr. Wickham and Lydia and convinced Mr. Wickham to Marry
Lydia. Mr. Darcy did all of this for his one true love, Elizabeth. He saw that she was in so much
distress so he did all he could and a whole lot more. In this whole instance Elizabeth was the
damsel in distress and the hero saved her and her whole family from ruin.

That is all I shall say for now as I have capped my word count. If you haven't seen Pride and
Prejudice (2005 version duh), what are you doing, go watch it.
