SERVICE BULLETIN
SUBJECT: ROTOR FLIGHT CONTROL -- Tail rotor controls / YAW SEMA
Revision 0 2016-03-17
Summary:
During an inspection, corrosion was detected on the control rod of the YAW SEMA (Smart Electro-
Mechanical Actuator). The corrosion was caused by water accumulation under the heat-shrinkable
sleeve. With this Service Bulletin (SB) the heat-shrinkable sleeve will be removed and replaced by
three cable ties. With accomplishment of SB MBB-BK117 C-2-67-019, the ASB MBB-BK117
C-2-67A-015 becomes ineffective.
Compliance:
1.A. EFFECTIVITY
(a) MBB-BK117 C-2, S/N 9004 up to and including S/N 9600 (*).
(*) During the installation of the YAW-SEMA i.a.w. design document B673M4002051 and B673M4003051, the grounding
strip is attached with cable ties to the control rod as a standard procedure. This procedure was introduced to the serial
production of helicopters from S/N 9601 and up.
1.C. REASON
During an inspection, corrosion was detected on the control rod of the YAW SEMA. The corrosion
was caused by water accumulation under the heat-shrinkable sleeve. For this reason ASB
MBB-BK117 C-2-67A-015 was issued. With this SB the heat-shrinkable sleeve will be removed
and replaced by three cable ties. With accomplishment of SB MBB-BK117 C-2-67-019, the ASB
MBB-BK117 C-2-67A-015 becomes ineffective.
1.D. DESCRIPTION
Remove heat-shrinkable sleeve. Inspect the control rod. Install grounding strip. Install three cable
ties.

3.A. GENERAL
CAUTION
(a) De-energize the helicopter electrical system i.a.w. AMM, 24-00-00, 2-1.
(b) Remove the vertical fin fairing i.a.w. AMM, 53-52-00, 4-1.
(c) Affix a danger sign “DO NOT MOVE FLIGHT CONTROLS” in the cockpit.
CAUTION
(a) Carefully remove the heat-shrinkable sleeve (1, Figure 2) from the control rod (2) using
a suitable tool. Discard the heat-shrinkable sleeve (1).
(b) Remove the screw (4, Figure 2) and the washer (3). Remove the grounding strip (5) from
the control rod (2). Store the screw and the washer for reuse.
(c) Remove the screw (6, Figure 2), the washers (7, 8). Remove the grounding strip (5) from
the tail boom. Store the screw and the washers for reuse. Discard the grounding strip.
(d) Visually inspect the control rod (2, Figure 2) in the area where the heat-shrinkable
sleeve (1) was installed:
1 If no corrosion is found on the control rod (2, Figure 2) proceed i.a.w. Section 3.B.4.
2 If corrosion is found on the control rod (2, Figure 2):
a Check the damage and repair limits i.a.w. AMM, 67-20-00, 8-3. If the corrosion is
not in the repair limits i.a.w. AMM, contact AHD customer support before the next
flight for further investigation. If necessary replace the control rod i.a.w.
Section 3.B.3.
(a) Energize the helicopter electrical system i.a.w. AMM, 24-00-00, 2-1.
(b) Make sure that the circuit breaker YAW SAS is pressed and switches AVIOMSTR 1 and 2
to the ON position. The YAW SEMA is self centering.
(c) De-energize the helicopter electrical system i.a.w. AMM, 24-00-00, 2-1.
(e) Measure and record the length between the centers of the holes in the fork end
(1, Figure 4) and the rod end (12) of the assembly.
(f) Disconnect the electrical connector (6, Figure 1) from the SEMA actuator (5).
(g) Remove the split pin (3, Figure 1), the nylstop nut (4), the washer (2) and the bolt (1). Store
bolt and washer for reuse. Discard the nylstop nut and the split pin.
(h) Remove the screw (12, Figure 1), the sheet (13), the locking washer (10) and the nut (9)
from the clamp (11). Discard the locking washer.
(i) Pull the clamp (11, Figure 1) off the control rod (7).
EFFECTIVITY All.
(j) Remove the adhesive silicone (4, Figure 4), the lockwire (3), the nut (5), the retainer nut (2)
and the fork end (1) from the control rod (6).
(k) Remove the remaining adhesive silicone with a lint-free cloth made damp with dry cleaning
solvent (CM 202). Store nut, retainer nut and fork end for reuse.
(l) Remove the screws (8, Figure 4) and washers (7) and remove the control rod (6). Store
screws and washers for reuse. Discard control rod.
(m) Put the clamp (11, Figure 1) on the new control rod (7) and slide it down to the point where
the cone of the socket begins.
(n) Install the screw (12, Figure 1), the sheet (13), a new locking washer (10) and the nut (9)
to the clamp (11). Torque the nut (9) to 4--6 Nm.
(o) Lock the nut (9, Figure 1) with the locking washer (10).
(p) Apply corrosion preventive compound (CM 5003) ( , Figure 4) onto adjacent area
between the control rod (6) and the SEMA actuator (13).
(q) Install the SEMA actuator with the washers (7, Figure 4) and the screws (8) to the control
rod (6).
