Title : Pneumatics circuit design
Introduction/Theory:
Sequence Control
The sequence control is most frequently used for the factory automation to perform the
operation in sequences of the control signals. There are two types of sequence control:

 A time control system in which the next operation is sequentially performed in a

certain period of time after the control signal has been output
 A position control system in which the operation is performed by the control signal
that is output only after a limit switch or a sensor has verified the previous operation.
The position control system is much used than the time control system that is simple, but
offers a lack of reliability. The mixed control signals for an actuator cause the problem in a
sequence control. If the control signals for the cylinder in forward and backward motions are
available at the same time, one of control signal is ignored. There are some solutions to avoid
such signal overlap or interference in the sequence control circuit.
The signal overlap is generally caused by the input control signal that lasts too long. Such
problem can be resolved by changing the control signal into a pulse that only lasts a few
moments. The pulse signal is obtainable by a NO type pneumatic timer, a directional roller-
lever limit switch, and the control circuits, including a cascade control and a stepper control
with a shift register module.

Lesson learning outcomes: At the end of this task, students should be able to:
1. Understand structure and function of a flow control valve
2. Know meter-in and meter-out control method
3. Understand structure and function of a directional control valve
4. Know about the sequence control circuit
5. Draw the pneumatic circuit according to given task
6. Install and commission pneumatic circuit

Safety precaution:

1. Pressurised air lines that became detached can cause accidents. Switch off supply
immediately.
2. Do not switch on compressed air until tubing is securely connected.
3. Cylinders may advance automatically as soon as the compressed air is switched on.
4. Do not operate roller lever valves manually during fault finding (use a tool)
Tools and equipment :
1. 5/2 directional control valve
2. 3/2 directional control valve
3. Two spring return limit valve
4. Double acting valve
5. 5/2 valve push button

Task #2: Control of double acting cylinder – cascade method

Problem:
A wooden planks are to be pushed along from a magazine to a packing box. When a push
button is pressed, the first cylinder extends and pushes the wooden plank on the magazine to
a packing box; then the second cylinder extends to push the packing box. Then the first
cylinder retracts and followed by second cylinder to its start position. The process continues
until a stop push button is pressed.

Tools and equipment:

Procedures:
1. Draw pneumatic circuit for the given problem.
2. Show the step by step procedures in designing this pneumatic circuit.
3. Prepare the required parts according to the above list
4. Compose system according to the circuit diagram drawn.
5. Check the connection part and any leakage of air
6. Turn on the hand lever valve of air service unit
7. Push the button of the valve to move the cylinder
8. Turn off the hand lever valve of air service unit after practice
9. Dismantle and arrange the components

Result / Discussion:
For discussion, cascade can be expanded to any number of stages. The arrangement always
remains the same all valves are connected in series .The first valve in the series issues two
output signal s1 and s2 and all others valves issues one output signal each . The next valvein
the series resets the valve before it,and so on.The last valve in the series receives two input
signals.

Conclusion:
a. Your conclusion should be related to this practical and theoretical understanding.
For conclusion, pneumatic circuit design involves a group of components that closely work
together to produce a desired performance .Component such as compressor, actuators, control
valves and conductor are arranged so that they will perform a certain task.
