Why Certify Hygienic Tubing to SA249/A269/A270 ?

Some tube manufacturers only certify their hygienic tubing to ASTM A270. Why does United
Industries manufacture, identify and certify our hygienic tubing as being compliant with multiple
product standards – ASME SA249, ASTM A249, ASTM A269 and ASTM A270? It’s simple - We offer
tubing that can be used in all aspects of a hygienic equipment project-not just in basic applications!
It represents superior tube quality.

ASME SA249/SA249M covers Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat-Exchanger, and
Condenser Tubes. It is generally identical in content to ASTM A249/A249M, but is usually one or two
revisions behind ASTM. Tubes manufactured to this standard can be used in the construction
of pressure bearing components that are built and qualified (stamped) to the requirements of
the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code.

ASTM A249/A249M covers Welded Austenitic Steel Boiler, Superheater, Heat-Exchanger, and
Condenser Tubes. This standard applies to the various grades of the 300 series of stainless steel –
304, 309, 310, 316, 317, 321, 347, and 6XN and 904L. Tubes may be manufactured either by an
autogenous (no filler metal) fusion welding process, or may be welded and drawn to final dimensions.
It provides requirements for: chemical composition; ordering information; manufacturing processes;
destructive and non-destructive testing; dimensional tolerances; straightness; surface and finish
conditions; fabricability; and product marking. A249 requires more different destructive tests of the
weld than do A269 and A270. And tensile testing is only required in A249 and A270/S2.
The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code does not permit the use of tubes certified to the ASTM
version of A249 in code stamped vessels.

ASTM A269/A269M covers Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General
Service. The focus of A269 is mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance of stainless tubing for a
variety of applications. It is incorporated in the list of acceptable material specifications in the
ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code.

ASTM A270/A270M covers Seamless and Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Sanitary Tubing. This
specification’s emphasis is on the surface finish of tubing, which can be specified in a number of ways
to a number of different finishes. Surface finish integrity and cleanability are the main focus of this
specification as surface irregularities can trap contaminants. Both A249 and A269 address surface
condition, only to say that all surfaces shall be free of scale. Only A270 provides options for specific
surface roughness parameters.
A270 is incorporated in the list of acceptable material specifications in the 3A Sanitary
Standards and in the ASME BPE Bioprocessing Equipment Standard, which has been adopted
in some local, state and international construction codes. Tubes manufactured and certified to the
BPE Standard are 100% bore-scoped for ID surface defects.
The BPE Standard is the only American standard that provides specific acceptance criteria for defects
such as pits, scratches, dents, weld bead characteristics, surface inclusions, weld slag, etc. for
polished and mill finished tubes.
