PRESENT SIMPLE: TELLING THE TIME

Times: What time is it? -It's .........

Other ways to tell the time:

5:58 it's about / almost six o'clock

6:00 it's six o'clock

6:05 it's six oh five / it's five past six

NOW: 7:06 it's seven oh six / it's six past / after seven

BR: past / AM: after

4:10 it's four ten / it's ten past / after four

3:15 it's three fifteen / it's (a) quarter past three

5:15 it's (a) quarter past / after five

1:20 it's one twenty / it's twenty past one

6:52 it's six fifty-two / it's eight to seven

5:52 it's five fifty-two / it's eight to six

11:58 it's eleven fifty-eight / it's about-almost midnight (12:00 am) / midday (12:00 pm)

12:00 pm: it's midday / it's noon

12:00 am it's midnight

NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE WHEN WE CHANGE THE PREPOSITIONS

it's tenhi past/after five= 5:10

it's ten to five= 4:50

Five to four 3:55

Twenty-five past three 3:25

Twenty-five to three 2:35 (two thirty-five)

Prepositions and time expressions: PRESENT SIMPLE

Times: AT -at 7:00 o’clock

Days of the week: ON -on Friday

Seasons: IN -in the summer / the spring / autumn / winter

Every + part of the day -every morning / afternoon

Night: AT

Weekend: AT

In the + part of the day -in the morning / the afternoon (at night)

GRAMMAR: PRESENT SIMPLE


USE: The present simple is used

1. To describe your routines and the activities that you do every day:

- I always get up at 7:00 am (+)

- I don’t go to work on Sundays (-)

- Do you have lunch at home? (?)

2. For things that are always true

- Banks in Bogotá open at 9:00 am

- Museums usually close at 7:00 pm

3. For facts: things that never change


- The earth goes around the sun

- Water boils at 100 °C

 For the 3rd person singular: pronouns he / she / it you add -s -es -ies to the
verbs in positive sentences

My father works in a school / the market opens at 10:00 am

Most verbs only add -s = runs / listens / works / cooks / drives

Watches (verbs ending in -sh -ch change to -es)

Wishes (verbs ending in -sh -ch change to -es)

Study = studies (consonant + y change to -ies)

Play = plays (vowel + y don’t change the -y)

IRREGULAR VERBS

HAVE = HAS

GO = GOES

DO = DOES

 In negative sentences you should add doesn’t + the verb without -s

My father doesn’t works in a school

The market doesn’t opens at 10:00 am
