SPECIFIC TASK INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions/criteria in the table below will be used by the assessor to determine whether the
tasks have been satisfactorily completed. Use these criteria / instructions to ensure you
demonstrate the required skills and knowledge.
If this assessment requires you to record information, your assessor will provide you with an
appropriate document/template.
In this assessment you will design a network to meet customer requirements, build the network
and test it in a virtualised environment. There are four tasks to complete. Full details for each task
are given below.

Skills assessment

You have been employed as a network consultant to design and build a local area network (LAN)
for a customer. Their requirements are:
1. There needs to be three sections of the network for Human Resources, Customer Support
and Management.
2. Each section needs to communicate with the other sections, but the customer wants an
interconnection device that can be used to implement security policy by filtering certain
types of traffic between the sections.
3. The HR and Management sections need to support 16 PCs and two printers each.
4. The Customer Support section needs to support 40 PCs, four printers and 40 mobile
devices (e.g. tablets, laptops).
5. There is one server to be used by all three sections. It must be connected in the
Management section.

Download the Packet Tracer template file (VU21988-HO1-RR.pkt) associated with this assessment
from Moodle, and open it up. Using the above information, create a suitable logical network

m
er as
design in Packet Tracer that meets the customer’s requirements.

co
You do not need to add all the end-devices to your design. In each section include at least one PC,

eH w
one mobile device in the Customer Support section and the server in the Management section.
Add suitable cabling between all devices.

o.
rs e
Note: Show your logical and physical network design to your teacher or tutor before you start the

next section. Include screenshot of design below. Logical can be showing by grouping devices
within a labelled box representing the sections.

Task 2: IP address allocation

Using 192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0 as your network address:
1. Subnet into six subnets of sufficient size for each section.
2. Allocate one subnet to each of the sections
3. Allocate IP address to all devices in your network using appropriate subnet.
Note: Demonstrate your IP address allocations to your teacher or tutor before you start the next
section. Also show the MAC addresses of your end devices to your teacher or tutor. It is suggested
to represent this in a table for easy reference.
Write your IP address allocations below:

Task 3: Test network connectivity

Now that you have designed and built your network, it is time for you to confirm that your
network works correctly.
Complete the following statements.
1. To confirm that each section can communicate with the other two sections at Layer 3, I
will use:
Answer:
IP addresses belong to the same network.
2. To confirm that the end devices in each section can use an Application Layer (Layer 7)
service on the server, I will use:
Answer:
Sending and receiving data like email.
3. To verify that there is a routing table used to route IP packets between the three sections,
I would:

Task 4: Reflection
Finally, answer these reflection questions about your network design below the questions.
1. Why is Packet Tracer an example of a virtualisation technology?
Answer:
Because you can literally define everything on the packet tracer like a real technology on
virtualization machine.

2. What shortcomings in real media are not simulated in the device interconnections in
Packet Tracer?
Answer:
We can’t test everything like voice call, video call and some kind of this devices.

3. If Packet Tracer has shortcomings, why is it useful to design and build a network in Packet

m
Tracer before it is built using real equipment?

er as
Answer:

co
Because packet Tracer allows students to design complex and large networks, which is often

eH w
not feasible with physical hardware, due to costs. Packet Tracer is commonly used by CCNA

o.
Academy students, since it is available to them for free.
