BILA-BILA FESTIVAL

Marinduque is the heart of the Philippine and made even more admired with its
breathtaking islands of known paradise found on earth. Marinduque that was called Bila-Bila
Festival or Butterfly Festival. Boac is the capital of Marinduque is being touted as the butterfly
center of the Philippines due to the emergence of butterfly farms in the town. In order to promote
the industry, the local government created the Bila-Bila Festival in conjunction with the Feast of
the Immaculate Conception (the town’s patron saint) on December 8. On the day of the
celebration, children from various schools in the town dress up in their best butterfly costumes
for a parade that depicts the life cycle of the butterfly. Brass bands, street dancing by costumed
delegates, and colorful, decorated floats also accompany the parade, with the image of the
Immaculate Conception at the end of the procession. . This multicolored event is also held to
highlight major occasions in the island province, notably town and among community fiestas, as
well as provincial anniversary, and other equally important events. Aside from its natural role of
enhancing their culture and environment, butterfly has been their good source of income for
numerous years now.

We all known that Bila-bila Festival is the one of the Festival in this province.Locally
called”Bila-bila Festival”this colorful affair is to highlight the major occasions in the island
province,town and community fiestas notably. The Bila-Bila places heavy preponderance on the
butterfly, According to RH Heinlein.Local restaurateur Aurora Majaba-PITERO says the
butterfly festival takes Marinduque’s culture to greater heights. This is a much-awaited affair and
the people who prepare for it, spending hard-earned money for costumes and all that just to be
part of the celebration. The people of Marinduque do not miss out on the concept of close in the
butterflies because participants in the Bila-Bila Festival varicolored costumes signifying wear
silky petals or butterfly wings. According to Erlie Manay, If the Moriones Festival of
Marinduque is a big hit among local and foreign tourists, the Bila Bila, arguably Festival is
bound to be another bestseller, considering the worldwide concern about global warming and the
environment in general.

Here in Boac every December 8, the Feastday of the Immaculate Concepcion, the town’s
official Fiesta celebration, did not dampen the spirit of all participants to the “Bila-Bila Festival”.
This festival is seeing its grandest celebration this year, the first time that the various barangay

Boaceños, for butterfly is not just a simple creature of God but a symbol of hope for every
Marinduqueños .

In addition, The Bila-Bila Festival was primordially initiated in concurrence of the


municipality’s festive honor of their patron saint, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception during
the 8th day of the month of December and serves as a thanksgiving of the townspeople. All
through the day of the celebration, young folks from different schools in the town dress up at
their best butterfly costumes for the much anticipated colorful street parade depicting best the life
cycle of the butterfly, or as much as definition of the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a
beautiful butterfly and insinuated with Brass bands, joyous street dancing with costumed
delegates, and multicolored, decorated floats intensifying the festival’s street parade, and with
the image of the Immaculate Conception at the end of the procession.

The festival, which shall be known as “Bila-Bila Festival”, Bila-Bila means butterfly in
local name. It shall also be an occasion to promote local delicacies, local products from abacca,
agro-industrial products as well as other profitable merchandise, that will definite enough prop
up and increase economic profits and gain. Unlike any other festivals which usually honor patron
saints, Bila-Bila festival is a unique way of paying tribute to butterflies that could be a big hit
worldwide emphasizing the heart of Marinduquenos in giving importance to the said creature.
