I. Objectives: After discussing the lesson on how to calculate board measure on pieces of
lumber, 70 % of the students are expected to:
1. be familiar with the units in measuring pieces of lumber;

2. carryout measurements on pieces of lumber; and
3. compute board measure on pieces of lumber in board foot/board feet.
II. Subject Matter: “Calculation of Board Measure on Pieces of Lumber”

Materials: - board - paper -pull-push rule
- pen -piece of lumber
Values: cooperation, accuracy, time and management, psychomotor skills
III. Procedure:

A. Motivation:
Before we formally start with our lesson which
is all about calculation of board measure on
pieces of lumber, can you give some of the
materials that are used in building construction?
Nail, Sir!
Very good, what else?
Plywood, Sir.
Brilliant, another one?
Lumber, Sir.
Very good, where does lumber came from?
It comes from the trees like mahogany, acacia,
melina, narra and others, Sir.
Very good class! So, what is a tree class?
A tall perennial woody plant having a main
trunk and branches forming a distinct elevated
crown.
Brilliant! The trunks and the branches of the
trees are cut into pieces and it will turn into
pieces of lumber.
B. Presentation:
In order to compute the price of lumber, we
need to get the board measure.
Board foot (BF) is the unit of measure used in
the computation of lumber. One board foot is
equivalent to 144 cubic inches or 1”x1’x1’. The
thickness and width of commercial lumber are
in inches while the length is in feet of even
number.
C. Discussion:
Board foot is computed using the following
formulas:
1. Bd. Ft.=T”xW’xL’
2. Bd. Ft.=T”xW”xL’/12
3. Bd. Ft.=T”xW”L”/12x12
4. Bd. Ft.=T’(12)xW’xL’
What does T, W, and L represents, Sir?
T=Thickness
W=Width
L=Length
How did you derive with these formulas, Sir?
These formulas are derived from formula
number one because 1 board foot is equal to
1”x1’x1’. In formula number 2, the width is in
inches, so we must divide it by 12 because 1
foot is equal to 12 inches. In formula number 3,
the width and length are in inches, thus we must
divide it by 12x12 or 144. And, in formula
number 4 the thickness is in feet so we must
multiply the thickness by 12. These formulas
are being used for sawed wood of commercial
dimension.
Example:
1. Compute the board foot of lumber whose
dimension is 1”x2’x3’.
Step 1. Identify the given data.
Given: T=1”
W=2’
L=3’
Step 2. Determine what is being asked.
Find the Bd. Ft=?
Step 3. State the formula.
Formula: Bd. Ft.=T”xW’xL’
Step 4. Substitute the given data in the
formula, then solve.
Solution: Bd. Ft.=T”xW’xL’

=1x2x3
Bd. Ft=6
dimension is 2”x4”x12’.
Given: T=2”
W=4”
L=12’
Find the Bd. Ft.=?
Formula: Bd. Ft.=T”xW”xL’/12
Solution: Bd. Ft.=T”xW”xL’/12
=2x4x12/12
Bd. Ft.=8
dimension is 2”x6”x12”.
Given: T=2”
W=6”
L=12”
Find the Bd. Ft=?
Formula: Bd. Ft.=T”xW”xL”/12x12
Solution: Bd. Ft.=T”xW”xL”/12x12
=2x6x12/12x12
Bd. Ft.=1
dimension is 1’x2’x3’.

Given: T=1’
W=2’
L=3’
Find the Bd. Ft=?

Formula: Bd. Ft.=T’(12)xW’xL’
Solution: Bd. Ft.=T’(12)xW’xL’
=1(12)x4x12
Bd. Ft.=576
D. Generalization:
What is a board foot?
Board foot (BF) is the unit of measure used in
the computation of lumber.
Very good! How many cubic inches are there in
1 board foot?
One board foot is equivalent to 144 cubic
inches or one square foot of lumber one inch
thick.
Exactly! The exact dimension of 1 board foot is
1”x1’x1’-T”xW’L’. And from this formula, we
can derive 3 more formulas as what we have
used in our examples.
So, any questions class that you want to clarify?

E. Application:
Direction: Compute the board foot of lumber whose dimensions are the following:
1. 1”x4”x12’
2. 2”x6”x24”
3. 1’x3’x4’
4. 2”x3’x8’
5. 2”x2”x6’
IV. Evaluation:
Carry out measurements on pieces of lumber then compute the board foot.
V. Assignment:
Form into triads and visit construction hardware or furniture shop then ask the price of
one board foot of lumber and write your observations about the process in dressing, cutting and
planing lumber.
