CHAPTER ONE
1.0 DEFINITION OF SIWES
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skill acquisition
training programme that forms part of the minimum academic requirement standard in
various degree programme of the Nigeria tertiary institution. It helps student to put what
they have theoretically in class into practice in the real problem world.

1.1 HISTORY AND BRIEF BACKGROUND OF SIWES

The scheme became fully effective in 1985. It has since be managed by the
Industrial Training Fund and funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
At the inception of this Polytechnic, in the 1978/79 Academic Session,
Polytechnics and other Technological Institutions in Nigeria were preparing their students
for Nigeria National Diploma (NND) programmes. This was in compliance with the
policy of Technological Education of the Federal Military Government (headed by
General Olusegun Obasanjo) at that time. Also, this was with the view to equate the NND
with University Bachelor’s Degree and thereby placing graduates of both programmes at
a uniform of Nigeria. Hitherto, while Degree Holder’s were placed on salary GL. 08
HND Holders were on GL.07.
During the 1980/81. Academic session the National Association of Nigerian
Technological Students (NANTS) succeeded in their request of reverting the NND to the
two-tier system of National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND)
restricted and made compulsory for ND only. However, ND graduates since then to
undergo a year working experience in industries as a condition to qualify them for
admission into the HND Programmes.
In accordance with the policy as stipulated by the National Board of Technical
Education (NBTE), instituting offering courses leading to the award ND is Science-based
and allied course are to arrange with industries for placement and supervision of their
student for a four (4) month supervised Industrial Training attachment one called students
Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). This aspect of the policy had been
responsible for the establishment of the Industrial Liaison and Placement Office (ILPO)
in the Registrar’s Department of all affected tertiary institutions including Moshood
Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
Although Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a beautiful programme set up
for practicalization of our theoretical knowledge. However there are certain suggestions
that must be taken in order to ensure improvement.

 Proper remuneration for students who went for the training

 There should be provision of SIWES placement for students in order to relieve
them off the stress.
 The duration of the training which is three months should be made completed for
all the students in order for them to gather maximum experience.
I therefore recommend the SIWES Programme to all students of Higher Institution of
Learning.
