Warm Rotaract Greetings from the President's Desk!

Well, I remember planning the 6 monthly calendar back then in June 2020. My Charter
Secretary Rtr. Sachi Kothari & I wanted to do something different with regards to the
International tourism day! After a lot of Ifs and Buts, Yes and Nos, Shall we & Maybe's, we
finally decided to do an ISD Bulletin on our very own country India. Being a bigtime Patriot,
I've always believed that India has multiple beautiful places which are lesser known and
highly underrated! This bulletin gives us a chance to know India more keenly and precisely!
Also, through this bulletin we have bonded real well with the Rotaract
of respective cities amid this covid!

Special thanks to Rtr. Suvidhi Solanki & Rtr. Sachi Kothari for making this happen!
All the love to Rtr. Manjari Oswal for editing this bulletin so beautifully ❤
I hope each one of you enjoy this bulletin ❤😌

Regards,

Warm Rotaract greetings from the ISD's Desk!
I remember my Charter President and Secretary telling me to do a tourism bulletin on India
This idea seemed very interesting to me and I willingly took up the challenge of doing the
bulletin! I came up with a list of Indian cities to be included in the bulletin and what all points
I needed from each city, then I started contacting the clubs in these cities, Rtr. Sachi also
helped me alot with this. The bulletin helped me build great contacts all over India.

This bulletin showcases some of the most beautiful Indian cities from a local's point of view, it
will give you a tour of some of the most popular tourist destinations in India, the culture,
lifestyle, sports and the Indian cuisine as well. I hope y'all love the bulletin and plan to visit
India really soon! 😍❤

So, what are you waiting for? Let's start with it!

Regards,
Rtr. Suvidhi Solanki

Mumbai is where the country’s future is being forged, and gleaming towers and a new
middle-class co-exist with sprawling slums and entrenched poverty. Living here means not
only surviving, but learning to appreciate the daily tumult, epic traffic and seasonal
monsoons, while enjoying life in the most cosmopolitan city on the subcontinent.

Tourist places to visit in MUMBAI

Marine Drive.
Marine Drive is a 3.6-kilometre-long Promenade along the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
Road in South Mumbai in the city of Mumbai, India. Often, the names Marine Drive and
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road are used interchangeably to refer to this 3.9km stretch.
Marine Drive is one of the top landmarks of Mumbai. Thus, you can easily find autos, taxis
and another road transportation to reach this road. If you are choosing to ride the local train,
you can get down at Churchgate station or Marine Line station. Both the stations are located
on the western line. From both the stations, it would not take more than ten minutes to
reach this road, on foot. If you are driving a car, you can easily get a parking spot near the
boulevard.

Shree Siddhivinayak.
The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shri Ganesh.
It is located in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was originally built by Laxman
Vithu and Deubai Patil on 19 November 1801.
To reach the temple you can take a taxi which will cost around INR 150 to INR 200. But a
cheaper option is to travel by the local train. For that go to Dadar station from CST station
(it’ll cost you around INR 5/per head and you will reach in 15 mins) From the Dadar(west)
station you can either walk or take a taxi which costs around INR 20.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vaastu Sangrahalaya.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is the main museum in Mumbai,

Maharashtra. It was founded in the early years of the 20th century by prominent citizens of
Mumbai, with the help of the government, to commemorate the visit of George V, who was
Prince of Wales at the time. It is located in the heart of South Mumbai near the Gateway of
India. The museum was renamed in 1998 after Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire.
The Museum is at a 20-minute walking distance from both major local railway terminuses,
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Central Railway) and Churchgate (Western Railway). You can
reach the Museum by bus or taxi from the nearest stations.
In a city of over 20 million people, space is understandably at a premium in Mumbai. For the
working class, daily life in Mumbai is commonly played out in what are called chawls --
multi-level tenements with single small rooms, which usually accommodate a whole family,
often with a shared bathroom for each floor. There's little privacy but the benefits are a
strong sense of camaraderie and support.
The burgeoning middle class live in mass-produced apartments of various shapes and sizes,
ranging from around 450 square feet to 1,400 square feet. Most have one or two bedrooms,
which again accommodate whole families including grandparents. It's not uncommon for
family members to sleep in the lounge room or even the kitchen. Prices are ridiculously
expensive, even more so than New York!
Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city known for its many lip-smacking dishes. Be it vegetarian or
non-vegetarian, the dishes in Mumbai boast of rich taste, fieriness and impressive flavours.
The cuisine of Mumbai covers a large assortment of interesting, authentic dishes and zesty
seafood dishes. The staple foods consumed by the residents of Mumbai include rice,
aromatic fish curries, Indian bread (chapatis and rotis), vegetable curries, pulses and
desserts. Coconuts, cashew nuts, peanuts and peanut oil are some of the major ingredients
used in many of Mumbai's traditional dishes. Mumbai houses many restaurants where
people can enjoy some amazing food. The city is known for its delectable chaats at the
various food stalls in the busy streets of Mumbai.

Cuisine in Chennai
● If you're one of those who believe that Chennai's cuisine doesn't stretch beyond its
'idli-dosa' stereotypes, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. From authentic Korean
cuisine to exquisite sushi to a Russian stand-alone restaurant, Chennai's food scene has
gone truly global.
● Coffee that are served at tiffin time in true-blue Mylapore establishments like
Karpagamabal Mess and Mami Mess, almost every corner of the city boasts of top
quality coffee.
● The Marina beach - one of the world's longest urban beaches, is almost an integral part
of the city's identity. It's also the best place to sample sundal - usually boiled white
channa tossed with mustard seeds, grated coconut, raw mango and curry leaves.
● Chennai's Burmese connection - a large number of Tamils left Burma in the early
1960s, is most evident in North Chennai where quite a few hole-in-the-wall
establishments (there's even one that calls itself Atho Shop) serve delicious Burmese
street food. This includes the fiery Atho - fried noodles tossed with cabbage, onion and
tamarind juice
● Chennai's fishing community can claim to be one of the city's earliest inhabitants. The
city is a treasure trove for seafood with fresh catch of the day easily available for homes
and restaurants alike (which is why it puzzles me why many restaurants choose to use
basa). One of the city's quintessential seafood dishes is Nethili fry - fried anchovies
tossed in a spicy masala(most restaurants coat the anchovies in a spicy '65' masala) -
crunchy and scrumptious.
● Jigarthanda literally means "Cool Heart". It is a cooling drink, originally from Madurai, is
found in various places of Tamil Nadu. Top places to drink Jigarthanda in Chennai -
Madurai Famous Jigarthanda, OMR Jigarthanda, Hanifa Jigarthanda.

An arts festival called the Chennai Sangamam, which showcases not only various art of Tamil
Nadu, but also from the neighbouring states, like kalari (from Kerala), which is a major
attraction, is held in January every year. The city has a diverse theatre scene and is one of the
important centres for Bharata Natyam, a classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu
and is the oldest dance of India.

Lifestyle at Chennai
The residents treat them as their own and are slowly learning the true feelings of being a
Chennaiite. Chennaiites are faithful to their faith and customs and observe the age-old rites
in a very special way, every day. The day of a Tamil household normally starts with early rising
and religious rituals performed. The doorsteps are decorated with kolam, on a daily basis.
Kolam are patterns made from rice power or white stone powder, which has both decorative
as well as religious significance.
Night life is a frequent complaint of people but we’re not entirely in agreement with that.
Yeah, it's not near what you've got in Mumbai and Bangalore, but there are some decent

KOLKATA AT A GLANCE
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of West Bengal and the second largest city in India,
after Mumbai. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, it served as the capital of
British India from 1772 till 1911. The capital was moved from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1911
partly because of growing nationalism in Bengal. It was home to the Indian Independence
Movement which aimed to put an end to British rule in India. It’s regarded as the cultural
capital of India, having spawned generations of artists, poets, writers, film producers, and
Nobel Prize winners. Curiously, Kolkata’s nickname is the “City of Joy”.

KOLKATA: PLACES TO VISIT

1. Mother House
The Mother House is the headquarters of the international religious congregation of the
Missionaries of Charity. It was Mother Teresa’s home since 1953 till her passing, and where her
body was laid to rest. You can pay your respects at her tomb and visit a small museum
displaying a few of her personal belongings. You can visit her room upstairs as well.
2. Victoria Memorial
The Victoria Memorial is a marble building in the Maidan, the largest urban park in Kolkata. It
was built using Makrana marble, the same prized marble used to construct the Taj Mahal. It’s
a large stately-looking building dedicated to Queen Victoria of England who was also
referred to as the Empress of India. There’s a museum with exhibits inside but you can also
enjoy the grounds and garden. It’s within walking distance from the Park Street area and is a
lovely place to escape from the chaos of Kolkata.
KOLKATA TOURISM
3. Indian Museum
Located at the west end of Sudder Street, the Indian Museum is the largest and oldest
museum in India. It features a variety of exhibits showcasing antiques, ornaments, fossils,
weapons, mummies, and paintings. You can easily spend a couple of hours here.
4. South Park Street Cemetery
Opened in 1767, it was in use until around 1830 and is now a protected heritage site. Many of
the nearly 1,900 graves are large and imposing, a few of them belonging to well-known
European military and political figures of the time. The same church tour that takes you to
the Mother House will bring you to South Park Street Cemetery as well.

5. Belur Math
This beautiful building is located on the west bank of the Hooghly River. It’s the temple
headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, a Hindu religious and spiritual
organization. The temple is noted for combining Christian, Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist
architectural elements to symbolize unity among religions. Belur Math is about 7-8 km north
of Howrah Bridge. After exploring Mallick Ghat Flower Market, you can walk across Howrah
Bridge and take a prepaid taxi to Belur Math from Howrah Railway Station.
6. Dakshineswar Kali Temple
Located a bit farther north across the river from Belur Math is Dakshineswar Kali Temple. It’s
a striking Hindu temple dedicated to Kali. The temple is impressive at any time of day, but at
late afternoon when the temple looks even more magnificent in the golden glow of sunset.
From Belur Math, take a short ferry ride up the river to Dakshineswar Kali Temple for INR 11.
After visiting the temple, take a local train back to the downtown area.

KOLKATA: HOW TO GET AROUND
Getting around Kolkata is a bit challenging. Not because there aren’t enough transportation
options, but because getting from point A to point B always requires some measure of
haggling. Kolkata does have a cheap metro system but it isn’t as extensive yet. In any case,
here are a few ways to get around Kolkata.

BY KOLKATA METRO: This is always a preferred means of transportation but unfortunately,

the Kolkata Metro isn’t as developed yet. At the moment, it has just one operating line that
takes you from north to south. Trains are crowded but clean and cheap, with every ride
starting at just INR 5.

BY LOCAL TRAIN: It isn’t as nice but the local rail network is far more extensive than the
metro. However, none of the stations are as close to the main tourist areas so you may have
to do some walking. Like the metro, fares start at just INR 5.

BY TAXI/TUK-TUK: One of the favorite photo subjects in Kolkata are these iconic yellow
Ambassador taxis. They can be found only in Kolkata. But as charming as they are, you have
to negotiate a fare. Tuk-tuks are the same way.

BY RICKSHAW: Kolkata is one of the few remaining cities in India that still have these
hand-pulled rickshaws. They’re mostly farmers who come to the city to do this line of work
during the offseason.

BY TRAM: The Kolkata tram is the oldest operating electric tram system in Asia. It’s a deficit
enterprise and is only being kept alive for its heritage value. It may be fun to experience for
tourists.
KOLKATA TOURISM
KOLKATA: CUISINE
In Kolkata, many local street vendors own small shops from which they sell their own
homemade goods. Items like cheeses (paneer) can be eaten as is, or can be made into
sweet sandesh, rosogolla, or chanar payesh. Milk is especially used in Kolkata's various types
of payesh, differing in use of different grains and additives like dates, figs, and berries. In
addition to European foodstuffs like chocolate, Kolkata takes culinary influence from its
Chinese diaspora. Puchka, also known as panipuri, is a common kind of Bengali street food
made with a fried dough casing and a potato and chickpea filling, usually found in small
stalls alongside bhelpuri, masala chai, ghugni and chaat stalls.

KOLKATA: CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE

The word ‘Bengali’ evokes a lot of emotion and is synonymous with art, culture, food, music,
cinema and everything connected to finer aspects of life. Truly as the famous saying goes,
“What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow!” a Bengali was considered an intellectual
leader during the British Raj. However, decay set in after independence and the Bengali
Bhadralok seems to be still stuck with reminiscing in the retrospective! In fact the various
addas can be seen in the city’s coffee houses, city halls and libraries, where the so called
“intellectual crowd” engaged in heated debate!

The city of Kolkata can be defined as an archive colonial heritage; a birthplace of great ideas,
great minds, revolutionaries, and revolutions; a dense, convergent flux of diverse ethnicities.
In this article, I try to highlight some main features of the city’s culture.
KOLKATA TOURISM
KOLKATA: NEIGHBOURHOODS
Like most cities, an essense of Kolkata’s diverse ethnicity can be assimilated from its
neighbourhoods and localities. There’s Central Kolkata, the business district, which has the
urban park in the city, there’s South Kolkata, which houses the city’s wealthy, and there are
neighbourhoods like Dharmatala, which merge historic buildings with residential
complexes.
But the most important, from the lens of ethnic cohabitation, is probably Bowbazar. The
area resides Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims, Parsis, all in a harmonious and mutually
respectful coexistence. Apart from the commonly seen places of worship, there is a
Zoroastrian temple, a Buddhist temple, a Synagogue, and an Armenian Church. Bowbazar’s
living is a lesson in tolerance for the world.

KOLKATA: ARCHITECTURE
Kolkata houses an enviable number of historical buildings, most of which are still in use. A
substantial number of structures were built during the colonial period and are follow the
European style. An evolution can be noticed from those built in the eighteenth century, like
Fort William, and those built during last decades of the British Rule, like the Victoria
Memorial.
Despite the acceptable western influence, Kolkata was also able to develop its own distinct,
or rather a fusion, architectural style. This can be seen in buildings like the Jorasanko Thakur
Bari, Rabindranath Tagore’s childhood home, the old Asiatic Society building, and the
mansions on Bishop Lefroy Road. There are also areas like the Salt Lake City, which were
planned in the decades following the Independence, and house modern, 21st century
residential buildings.

The city of Ahmedabad, now the seventh largest metropolis in India and the largest in the
state of Gujarat, was founded in 1411 AD as a walled city on the eastern bank of the river
Sabarmati. Historically Ahmedabad has been one of the most important centers of trade
and commerce in western India. It is also a major industrial and financial city contributing
about 14% of the total investments in all stock exchanges in India and 60% of the total
productivity of the state. It is the home of several scientific and educational institutions of
national, regional and global importance. The city has a great architectural tradition
reflected in many exquisite monuments, temples and modern buildings.

1. Gandhi Ashram: Sabarmati Ashram is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad,

Gujarat, adjoining the Ashram Road, on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 4.0 miles from the
town hall. This was one of the many residences of Mahatma Gandhi when he was not
travelling across India or in prison. The Bhagavad Gita was recited here daily as part of the
Ashram schedule.
It was from his base here that Gandhi led the Dandi march also known as the
Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930. In recognition of the significant influence that this march
had on the Indian independence movement the Indian government has established the
ashram as a national monument.
With prior appointment from The Secretary, Gandhi Ashram Preservation and Memorial
Trust, a walking tour can be organised. This 90-minute guided tour starts with a slide show
and ends at the Library.

2. Kankaria Lake:  Kankaria Lake is the second largest lake in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is
located in the south-eastern part of the city, in the Maninagar area. It was completed in 1451
during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II though its origin is placed in
the Chaulukya period sometimes. A lakefront is developed around it, which has many public
attractions such as a zoo, toy train, kids city, tethered balloon ride, water rides, food stalls, and
entertainment facilities. The lakefront was revamped in 2007―2008. Kankaria Carnival is a
week-long festival held here in the last week of December. Many cultural, art, and social
activities are organised during the carnival. Ahmedabad Railway Station (ADI) is the nearest
major railway station.

3. Adalaj Step-well: The step well is an incredibly beautiful monument to the stonewalled
and artisans who created it in the mid 15th century. Tiny carvings adorn the many walls of
the building. When you arrive, there are crowds of people selling spices, shawls, sweets,
icecreams. The well sits in a large plot with green gardens and trees along one side. In the
heat of the day it is a good destination as you can feel the coolness emanating as you
descend the many steps.

4.Manek Chowk: This bustling open square near the center of the city functions as a
vegetable market in the morning and a jewellery market in the afternoon, the second
biggest in India, at an apparently 3 million rupees of annual turnover. It is most famous,
however, for its food stalls that start to emerge around 8 in the evening, with various local
street snacks and goodies. This quarter, the oldest of the city, is named after the 15th century
saint Baba Maneknath, who is said to have interrupted Ahmed Shah’s efforts to build the
new capital. Each day he would weave a mat while the fort walls were being built, which he
would then unravel at night, magically bringing down the walls.
AHMEDABAD TOURISM
5. Sidi Saiyyed Mosque: Off the eastern end of Nehru bridge stands the Sidi
Saiyyed mosque. Built in 1573, it is the last of the major mosques to be built in Ahmedabad
under the Mughal rule. Surrounded by busy intersections, it presents a stark contrast to
speeding buses and giant advertisements. The carved jaalis in the windows of the western
wall are known worldwide and have become a symbol of the city of Ahmedabad. Depicting a
tree with intertwining branches, the carvings look like fine lace filigree work, but are hewn
from solid stone. Though much smaller than the Jama Masjid, and lacking the enclosed
courtyard, the craftsmanship of this mosque places it on a level nearly unequaled in the
world.
Travel Options to and in Ahmedabad
By road: Gujarat has one of the better developed road networks in India. Ahmedabad is well
connected with all major cities and towns by road. Regular bus services are available by
Gujarat state transport buses and private operators to all the major destinations of the state.
By rail: The main railway station is located in Kalupur area. This station falls under the
prominent national railway circuit and is connected to all major cities of India.
By air: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport at Ahmedabad is an international airport with direct
flights to USA, UK, Singapore, Dubai and other international hubs.  Numerous domestic
flights are also operational from here.
Food of Ahmedabad
The Gujarati food cannot be missed and there is nothing better than having great street
food in the bustling city of Ahmedabad. The food here is tempting and full of different spices
and flavors. Though most of the Ahmedabad traditional food is vegetarian, there are some
places that serve non-vegetarian food as well. Here you can have a quick view of the famous
street food delicacies and food markets in Ahmedabad that shouldn’t be missed.

Goa Tourism

Lying on the western coast, Goa is India's smallest state and unlike any other, known for its
endless beaches, stellar nightlife, eclectic seafood, world-heritage listed architecture. It is a
far cry from the hippie haven or a beach getaway, and one of the only few destinations that
is open 24x7. The laid-backness (susegad) of Goa attracts as many international tourists as it
does Indians, or even more so. The Goans are quite friendly towards tourists and celebrate
many festivals throughout the year, the most famous being the New Year and Goa Carnival.
While the seafood is excellent, Goa has one of the best nightlife in India with trendy bars,
beach shacks, elegant cafes and many clubs and discotheques. Thanks to lower alcohol
prices in the state, Goa is also great for younger tourists with relatively tighter pockets.
For those of us perpetually confused between North Goa and South Goa, this might help -
the state of Goa is divided into North Goa and South Goa. While North Goa is the nightlife
hub where all the touristy beaches, flea markets, and beach shacks are located, South Goa is
the land of luxurious resorts and laid-back beach vibes. Having been a Portuguese territory
for almost 450 years, the Portuguese architecture is nowhere as prevalent as in Goa - visit
one of the many whitewashed churches, crumbling forts or spectacular churches. The yellow
houses with purple doors, ochre coloured mansions and oyester shell windows is what
completes the kaliedoscope of Goan architecture. Panjim, located in the centre overlooks the
calm Mandovi River where the famous floating casinos of Goa are docked. It is well
connected with an international airport; roads and trains run from North to South Goa. While
Baga and Calangute are more popular among the Indian family crowd, Anjuna and Arambol
draw a lot of foreign tourists. The beaches in South Goa are relatively lesser explored, but
some of them like Agonda and Palolem are more beautiful.

Warm Rotaract Greetings!

Tour dé Bharat was a concept which came to Rtr. Aishwarya and me when we were discussing what
can be done for Indian Tourism. After some time of struggling to come up with something different,
we came to the conclusion that INDIA is not just what you see on Google, INDIA is an experience! And
who better to describe this experience than the residents of that place. Hence the concept of a
Bulletin which landmarks a few beautiful and some underrated cities of India from a Local's point of
view! Rtr. Suvidhi took up on the challenge and got in touch with so many clubs all over India to
compile the information for the bulletin!
We hope you all fall in love with the INDIAN EXPERIENCE that we have tried to provide through this
and visit these cities🤩

Loads of love,
