1. Background.
An Engineer’s Pre-Quality Checklist indicated that approximately 3126 metres of
Subsoil Soil Drains are required at the Xmas Pass section. Due to the constrained
nature of the site some sections not accessible by TLB will have to be excavated by
hand.
2. Introduction
This Method Statement (MST UT 013) describes the construction sequences to be
followed for the construction of the subsoil drain at the Christmas Pass section.
Specification
Reference Standards
3. Plant + Equipment
Item No Operation
TLB 1 Excavation
Survey Equipment 1 Level Control
Hand Tools(picks. Shovels, wheel burrows many Excavation, backfilling, laying
Hand Rammers 1 Compaction of backfill
Tipper Trucks 1 Movement of filter material
4. Method
I. Set out as shown on chainages in the subsoil drain pre-quality document.
II. Engineer inspects and approves the setting out.
III. Excavate to the required depth either, 1.2m, 1.5m or 1.7m and width of
600mm. Care being taken to ensure that the subsoil drain discharge points
are above the culvert inverts to prevent siltation blockage.
IV. After excavation, finish off the bedding to ensure an even grade. Where
the excavated width is in excess of the required width, this shall be
corrected by shuttering and backfill on the outer side of the trench.
V. Place the Bidum into the trench and pin to the sides of the trench ensuring
that sufficient length is provided to give an overlap of at least 200mm
when the Bidum is wrapped around the filter material.
VI. Place filter material on the Bidum covered trench to a depth of 35mm.
VII. Place and join the perforated PVC pipes ensuring that the perforations lie
symmetrically on the bottom sides, centre and anchor the pipes in position.
VIII. Add filter material to the required depth ensuring that the process does not
distort the alignment of the PVC pipes.
IX. Unhook the Bidum and complete the wrapping of the filter material with
at-least 200mm overlap of the Bidum.
X. Place and compact an impervious backfill of at-least 150mm thickness,
compaction shall be in layers not exceeding 100mm each ensuring that this
forms a plug/seal preventing surface storm water gaining access to the
subsoil drain. The end of the pipe on the upstream side shall be sealed with
a concrete plug of 150mm square.
XI. The drain can then be finished off by a concrete lined drain or a soil
cement lined drain.
7.0 Safety
All works will take place on the existing road.
1. Traffic accommodation as per drawings and risk assessment.
2. All trenches shall be barricaded with danger tape.
3. The supervisor shall assess the risk of trench collapse daily.
4. Excavation shall proceed from the discharge point upwards to prevent ponding that
might undermine the road structure.
8.0 Environmental
All loose material to be carted away and disposed of at approved sites to prevent
siltation.
