Flyer - DAS Distributed Acoustic Sensing
An acoustic disturbance generates a local change in the refractive index of the optical fiber. The
change in refractive index causes an interferometrically measurable change in the optical path
which can be measured by the DAS.
Most detections of TPI (third party interference) events are in a low frequency range of typically
<500 Hz. The interrogator is also able to measure sub-Hertz frequencies.
A typical system would monitor a 70 km long fiber at 10 m spatial resolution providing 7000 channels
of data. The DAS interrogator is connected to a powerful data processing unit, which processes the
data in real time.
The system also enables the user to “listen into” any selected part of the fiber,
which may help to verify received signals with the human capabilities.
Detection of threats
Each application has different requirements. AP Sensing’s DAS technology uses the powerful
interferometric phase-sensitive C-OTDR method to locate every acoustic noise event along the fiber
within the spatial resolution configured, typically a 10-meter channel with high sensitivity and
accuracy.
Intelligent event detection is built in and is available
immediately. During a learning phase the system is optimized.
Each event has a specific acoustic pattern which is analyzed and
used to classify the event. It is important to focus on real threats
and not to make the classification too specific, to avoid
misclassification.
The most important objective is to separate normal activities and noise sources from unusual or
threatening activities. AP Sensing’s engineering team works closely with the client to determine the
environmental situation and detection requirements.
Historical data can be captured and stored over a long period of time in an aggregated format,
while raw data is only available for an interim period and is typically cyclically overwritten with a
user defined time to live (TTL). When an event is detected, raw data around this event is frozen
for further analysis. In the case of an undetected event the stored historical data may deliver
valuable information through post- processing, leading to further enhanced detection methods.
