1) Density of aluminium is 2700 kg / m³? Will a solid stone of aluminium float in liquid mercury of
density 13.6 g / cc
2) A solid ice cube is floating in a liquid of density 1.2 g / cc. Density of ice is 0.92 g/cc. The volume
of the cube is 216 cc. Find the height of the cube above the liquid surface. Assume that the cube
sides always remain horizontal and vertical.
3) Google to find location of “dead sea”. Is it really a sea? Why is it called as sea? What is the
special feature of that water body? Check out video of tourists swimming in dead sea.
4) Everyone has heard the phrase “tip of the iceberg”? What does it mean? To ease out calculation,
consider pure water (1 g/cc) and iceberg (0.92 g/cc) of pure water floating in pure water ocean.
What fraction (express as fraction and as %) of the iceberg volume is outside water?
5) A solid cube of plastic (density 0.65 g / cc) is put in a liquid of density 2 g/cc. The cube always
stays with its top surface of area 144 sq cm horizontal. Find the height of cube that is above the
liquid surface.
6) A cuboid brick of steel (density 7 g/cc) has cross sectional area = 20 cm x 10 cm and height 6
cm. It is gently put in a mercury bath so that it does not roll. Find the height of brick inside the
bath.
7) A solid plastic cube floats in a liquid of density 1.6 g/cc. 25% of the cube volume is outside the
liquid. What is the density of plastic?
8) Density of a type of wood is 800 kg/m³. A solid cylinder of wood is made with height 30 cm and
radius 14 cm. Then, a through and through coaxial cylindrical hole of radius 7 cm is drilled. The
cylinder is floating in water (density 1000 kg/m³) with its axis vertical. How much height is inside
water?
9) Density of a type of wood is 800 kg/m³. A solid cylinder of wood is made with height 30 cm and
radius 14 cm. Then, a through and through coaxial cylindrical hole of radius 7 cm is drilled. A
plastic cylinder is fitted in that hole. Density of plastic is 0.6 g/cc. The cylinder is floating in water
(density 1000 kg/m³) with its axis vertical. How much height is inside water?
10) A wooden plank (density 0.4 g/cc) of size (80 cm x 40 cm and height 10 cm) is floating in water
(1 g/cc). A metal sheet (density 3 g/cc) of same size (80 cm x 40 cm) but height 2 cm is gently
kept exactly on top of the plank. Will the combined object float or sink? Explain why.
1) Yes, because 2.7 < 13.6. Any object of aluminium (hollow or solid of regular or any irregular
shape) will always float in mercury.
2) 1.2 cm cube height is outside.
3) To discuss with friends first and then if any queries, with the teacher.
4) Only 8% of the total iceberg volume is outside. Hence the term “tip of the iceberg”
5) Height outside = 8.1 cm.
6) Height inside = 3.09 cm
7) Density of plastic = 1.2 g/cc
8) Height inside = 24 cm
9) Height inside = 22.5 cm
(Note: Compare problems 8 and 9. The objects are similar. Which object is heavier and
which answer is more? Are all aspects correct or you find anything wrong or puzzling?)
10) It will float. Mass of the combined object = 32000 g. If we calculate mass of that much
volume of water (the combined object volume), it is 38400 g. So it will float.
