DURATION: 5 DAYS

LESSON 1: IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module learner will be able to:
 Know the importance of hand washing
 Demonstrate the proper hand washing
 Understand the need of hand washing to prevent illness.
Activity 1: Check the box for your answer.
1. Is it important to wash your hands with soap and water?

Yes No
2. Can your hands look clean and still have germs on them that can make your hands
sick?

Yes No
3. How often do you wash your hands?

Never Sometimes Always

4. When do you wash your hands?

Before eating any food After taking a bath

5. How long do you wash your hands?

20 seconds 5 seconds

LESSON PROPER:
Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of
germs/micro-organism which prevent communicable diseases. It’s easy to learn how
to wash your hands and how to stop the spread of infection by washing the germs
away. Good hand washing can prevent diseases such as: Shigellosis, Coli,
Streptococcal Disease, Influenza and the common cold.
We can pick-up germs from doorknobs, stair railings or anything that has been
touched by others who aren’t good hand washers.

Hand hygiene is a way of cleaning one’s hands that substantially reduces

potential pathogens (harmful microorganisms) on the hands. Hand hygiene
procedures include the use of alcohol-based hand rubs (containing 60%-95% alcohol)
and hand washing with soap and water.

How to Properly Wash Your Hands? (to be discussed online)

The Steps for Routine Hand washing.

REMEMBER THAT YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR HANDS AT LEAST 20-30 SECONDS.

Hand washing with soap and water is recommended (rather than using
ABHR) in the following situations:

 If hands are visibly soiled or contaminated with blood or body fluids

 After using the toilet

 Before eating
 After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

 After touching garbage

 After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste.

Activity 2: Color the pictures and number each so they’re in the right order.

KEY WORDS:
 Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) is a fast-acting, antiseptic hand rub that does not require
water to reduce resident flora, kills transient flora on the hands, and has the potential to
protect the skin(depending on the ingredients).
 Clean water is natural or chemically treated or filtered water that is safe to drink and use
for other purposes because it meets national public health standards and the WHO
guidelines for drinking-water quality.
 Hand hygiene is the process of removing soil, debris, and microbes by cleansing hands using
soap and water, ABHR, antiseptic agents, or antimicrobial soap.
 Hand washing is the process of mechanically removing soil, debris, and transient flora from
hands using soap and clean water.
 Soap a substance used with water for washing and cleaning, made of compound of natural
oils or fats with sodium hydroxide or another strong alkali, and typically having perfume and
coloring added.

LESSON 2: OBSERVING
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module learner will be able to:
 Use words to describe objects.
 Use sense organs to make an observation
 Follow directions
Activity 1: Observe the picture below and answer the following questions.

1. What is the boy doing?

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

2. How does he observe the butterfly and the plants?

_______________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

3. Why do you think he is observing them?

________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

LESSON PROPER:

Observing means using one or more of your sense organs to study an

object or a situation.
EXAMPLE: Describing a pencil as yellow

The Five Senses

(Please write these in your Science notebook)

Sense Organs and their Function

Eye can help describe the color, shape, and size of
Sight objects.
Nose can help describe the smell of objects as pleasant,
Smell unpleasant, or no smell.
Ear can help describe whether a sound is soft or loud,
Hearing high and low
Tongue can help describe the taste of food using our
Taste taste buds.

Touch Skin can help describe texture, and feel objects.

Activity 2: Match the pictures to the correct senses.
(Please write these in your Science notebook)
KEY WORDS:

Observing - Is a science process skill used in gathering information about objects

and events. Observations are descriptions of what you see, taste, smell, hear and
feel.
Science Process Skills -are a set of skills used in scientific activities. You will describe
things by telling their properties. You will identify properties of matter by observing
them using your senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing.) You can describe
matter and identify an object based on your observations.
