Question 1: Amazonia hosts the Earth’s largest tropical forests and has been shown to be an important carbon sink over recent decade. This carbon sink seems to be in decline, however, as a result of factors such as deforestation and climate change...We find that total carbon emissions are greater in eastern Amazonia than in the western part, mostly as a result of spatial differences in carbon-monoxide-derived fire emissions... Critically analyse the above statement and state the drivers which led to this situation. According to you, what would be the impact of such a drastic transition and suggest ways in which it can be controlled. What is the role of amazon rainforest in combating climate change?

Question 2: We need greatly enhanced action from businesses at every level of the supply chain, and globally - not just in the more traditional consumer markets in the global north. Businesses must act not only in removing deforestation and conversion from their individual supply chains, but also by ensuring that their suppliers, and not just their supplies, are sustainable in all their operations, as well as engaging in broad sectoral agreements and landscape approaches on the ground and proactively collaborating with public and financial institutions. (15 marks, 1200-1500 words) Question 3: Ecological systems are complex and interlinked, and not all that nature provides is of obvious or direct benefit to humanity. The lives and livelihoods of millions of people in rural communities around the world are frequently endangered by wild animals. These animals, which include many of the most iconic species, inflict untold damage on crops, livestock and property, and claim many tens of thousands of human lives annually. Tragically, the cost of human-wildlife conflict is disproportionally borne by many of the most impoverished rural communities on the planet; by those who can least afford it.
