Lesson 13 – Clauses of purpose

To introduce a clause of purpose we can use SO THAT or IN ORDER TO. These expressions are used at the beginning of
the clause – it is the part of a sentence which explains why somebody does or did something. We can use any of them to
express the same, what changes is the STRUCTURE. PAY ATTENTION to the examples.

Look at these examples:

My dad goes for long walks so that he can keep fit.

main clause + so that + subject + can/could + infinitive verb + object/complement


(a purpose clause)

My dad goes for long walks in order to keep fit.

main clause + in order to + infinitive verb + object/complement


(a purpose clause)

Solve the following activities.

a- Choose the correct option to complete the sentences with SO THAT or IN ORDER TO

1- He’s studying hard in order to / so that pass his exams.


2- I’ll give you my mobile number in order to / so that you can call me.
3- You have to pay a membership fee in order to / so that join the health club.
4- He got a broadband connection in order to / so that download large files.
5- She took lots of photos on holiday in order to / so that she could show her friends what the place was like.
6- I want a laptop in order to / so that I can work in the school library.

Giving instructions
b- David’s mum is going to Australia for three weeks. Read her instructions. What are they for? Choose the correct
option.
1- using the dishwasher
2- washing clothes
3- using the oven

Dear David,

While I’m away helping Aunt Sally with her new baby, I’m sure you’ll be fine. I know you and Dad
can cook and will do the shopping – but don’t forget about everything else!
Here are the instructions I promised:

1- Empty the basket of dirty clothes onto the floor ………………………………… see what you’ve got.
2- Check you have put all the socks in pairs …………………………………… you don’t get lots of odd
socks.
3- If you’ve got more light colours, you’ll have to wash them first. If you are washing bright

c- Read the instructions in exercise “b” again and write SO THAT or IN ORDER TO in each space to complete the
sentences.
d- Read David’s email to his mum, it is mixed up. Number (1-4) the sentences (a-d) to put them in the correct
order. Which machine does he want instructions for? Choose one option.

Dear Mum,
………… a- Dad says we need to use the ………………………………………… but we
don’t know how to use it.
………… b- I hope you’re having in ice time with Aunt Sally and the baby.
………… c- Can you send us some instructions?
………… d- It’s rained all week, so we haven’t been able to hang the clothes out

e- Match the beginnings of the instructions (1-5) with the endings (a-e).

1- Close the door and select 60 minutes. a- you can open the door safely.
2- Wait for the machine to finish b- start the machine.
3- Put the wettest clothes in the machine first c- check they can go in the dryer.
4- Read the drying instructions on the all clothes d- all the clothes will dry completely.
5- Press the “on” button e- they have time to get dry.

f- Complete the email from David’s mum. Write the instructions from exercise “e” in a logical order. Join the two
halves - (1-5) and (a-e) - with SO THAT or IN ORDER TO.

Having a loving time but missing you lots. Baby Louise is beautiful and Sally and I are having fun.
