Assignments 2

In assignment 2, use the following formulae ( σ Y in terms

σ x ,σ y and
τ xy ):

1. Tresca’s theory:
σ Y =σ 1−σ 2 =√ σ 2x −2 σ x σ y +σ 2y +4 τ 2xy

2. Haigh’s theory:
σ Y =√ σ 21 −2 υσ 1 σ 2 + σ 22 =√ σ 2x −2υσ x σ y +σ 2y +2(1+υ)τ 2xy

3. von Mises theory:

σ Y =√ σ 21 −σ 1 σ 2 + σ 22 =√ σ 2x −σ x σ y +σ 2y +3 τ 2xy

Assignments 3
1. A column made of aluminum channel is shown in Figure 1. If the column is 2.2 m long
and fixed at both ends, determine its critical buckling load. Take E = 70GPa (Take
thickness of channel section as 16 mm).

Fig. 1

2. A column made of aluminum hollow circular section is shown in Figure 2 with external
and internal diameter of the section as 16 mm and 8 mm, respectively. If the column is 2
m long and fixed at one end and free at other end, determine its critical buckling load.
Take E = 70GPa.
Fig. 2

3. A column made of aluminum solid circular section with 12 mm diameter. If the column is
2 m long and hinged at both ends subjected to an eccentric load of 120 N with
eccentricity e = 3mm, determine the total compressive stress in the column. Take E =
70GPa.

4. The pin-connected plane steel truss shown in Figure 3 carries a concentrated force F.
Assuming that both members have a circular section with a diameter of 80 mm,
determine the critical buckling load of the truss (E = 200GPa).

Fig. 3

5. A bar of solid circular cross-section has built-in end conditions at both ends and a cross-
sectional area of 2cm2. The bar is just sufficient to support an axial load of 20 kN before
buckling. If one end of the bar is now set free from any constraint, it is obvious that the
bar has a lower critical buckling load (Figure 4). The load-carrying capacity, however,
can be maintained without consuming extra material but by making the bar hollow to
increase the second moment of cross-sectional area. Determine the external diameter of
such a hollow bar (Fix internal diameter as diameter of solid section).
Fig. 4

6. A column is built up of two channels placed back to back as shown in Figure 5. Calculate
If the column is 1m long and hinged at both ends, determine its critical buckling load.
Take E = 80GPa. (The section properties of Channel: Izz = 1132 cm4, Iyy = 165 cm4, A =
34 cm2 and z0 = 2.3 cm)
