1- The rigid platform in Fig (1) has negligible mass and rests on two steel bars,
each 250. mm long. The center bar is aluminum and 249.9 mm long. Compute the
stress in the aluminum bar after the center load P = 400 kN has been applied. For
each steel bar, the area is 1200 mm 2 and E = 200 GPa. For the aluminum bar, the
area is 2400 mm2 and E = 70 GPa.

fig (1)
2- The composite bar in Fig (2) is firmly attached to unyielding supports. Compute
the stress in each material caused by the application of the axial load P = 50 kips.

fig (2)
3- A solid cylinder of diameter d carries an axial load P. Show that its change in
diameter is (4P /Ed).
4- Calculate the increase in stress for each segment of the compound bar shown
in Fig (3). if the temperature increases by 100C. Assume that the supports are
unyielding and that the bar is suitably braced against buckling.

fig (3)
5- A uniform bar of length L, cross-sectional area A, and unit mass m is
suspended vertically from one end. Show that its total elongation is = gL 2 / 2E.
If the total mass of the bar is M, show also that = MgL/2AE.
6- A compound shaft consisting of a steel segment and an aluminum segment is
acted upon by two torques as shown in Fig (4).determine the maximum permissible
value of T subject to the following conditions: st = 83 MPa, al = 55 MPa, and the
angle of rotation of the free end is limited to 6. For steel, G = 83 GPa and for
aluminum, G = 28 GPa.

7-Determine the body force distribution required for equilibrium and the
magnitude of its resultant at the point x = 10 mm, y = 30 mm, z = 60 mm.

8- For what body forces will the following stress field describe a state
of equilibrium?
