Professional Statement

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to become a Social Worker, and for me it all

boils down to my love and desire to help others. All throughout my life I have enjoyed helping

people, being of service to others, aiding to others in any way I could. My mother works at

Warren County Children Services in Ohio and I grew up in her office. I constantly saw her

employees making a difference in the lives of the families and individuals within the County and

I knew that that was exactly what I wanted to spend my life doing.

Being an advocate is rooted in an “ethical obligation to address and diminish human

suffering, discrimination, and oppression”. Being an advocate in the social work profession is a

strength I believe I could bring to this professional role of social work - I have always cared very

deeply for others and have always put others before myself. I hate to see others upset or in

distress, and I would do anything to try and aide to that situation to make a person feel better and

to avoid it from happening again in the future. I feel like the attributes I possess of being very

empathetic and caring deeply about others could make myself a great advocate in the future.

Another strength I could bring to this professional role of being a social worker is, the ability to

be a mediator. My whole life I have always been the one that my friends would call or text when

they were having issues with their significant other, or another friend; that being said, I also

always ended up being in the center of all the disputes, constantly trying to mediate and keep a

neutral ground in the issues. I feel like I have a very good ability in keeping a level head in those

kinds of situations and also finding a common ground between two groups. In social work you

constantly hear about how it is always “someone against another” and some people can feel like

there is no compromising in some situations. I would love to be able to be a mediator between

two parties, helping them see a common ground.

Before entering the Social Work practice, there are areas of improvement that I would

love to see strengthened within myself. My Critical-thinking skills are the first things that come

to mind, I have been known to only think of things from a fact-based standpoint, almost as if

there is only one solution to any said problem. I find myself having trouble thinking “outside the

box”, and as a social worker you need to have a critical thinking mindset to examine all the facts

and information within the cases of your clients. Some issues that could arise do not only have

one way of “fixing” things, so I would love to strengthen my critical thinking skills in order to

assist individuals and families to find the best solution to solving their problems. Another area I

would love to see improvement on before entering the social work profession is my Active-

listening skills, I sometimes find myself listening to someone and constantly thinking of how to

reply and what to say that once they are finished talking, I can sometimes miss the little things

being said and have only focused on the bigger points and how to respond to them. A huge part

of being a social worker is listening to the needs of their clients, in strengthening my active

listening skills I will be able to effectively hear all the needs of my clients, big and small.

My hopes for how the social work curriculum will assist me in my professional growth

are huge. I desire to learn more about the profession as a whole, as it is constantly changing and

adapting to our ever-changing world. Staying informed on how our society is changing and how

to be the best advocate for those around me is something I value highly. I believe that the social

work curriculum will help me to grow into a more informed individual, aware of what is going

on around me, especially in different cultures and backgrounds.
