TEST 2

MKPP 1413 (DRILLING ENGINEERING & WELL COMPLETION) SEMESTER 2,

SESSION 2020/2021

Instructions: (1) Answer the following question. (2) Please write your name on answer papers
and consolidate all your answers into one PDF file prior to uploading into UTM e-learning
site before the due time of 19 June 2021. (3) Failure to follow instruction (2) will result in zero
mark.

As Well Completion Engineer, you have been tasked to design a 9⅝-inch surface casing string with
its setting depth at 3250 ft. The load that must be considered is burst, collapse, and tension (casing
body and joint strength) only. The design safety factor for burst and collapse is 1.1 while tension is
1.7. The casing string must consist of two different sections with the optimum section
discrimination depth is found to be at 1950 ft. Other informations given are mud weight set in is
9.2 ppg, formation water gradient is 0.47 psi/ft, gas kick gradient is 0.12 psi/ft, fracture gradient at
shoe is 14.0 ppg, minimum drift is 8.50 in, and safety factor for injection pressure 1.0. (Note: Please
use a proper graph paper and all values of interval of the x- and y-axis must be clearly shown.
Failure to comply any of the two instructions will result in zero mark for your plot.) (30 marks)

Given Data:
• A 9⅝-inch surface casing string
• Setting Depth (SD) = 3250 ft
• The load that must be considered is burst, collapse, and tension (casing body and joint
strength)
• Safety Factor = 1.1 @ burst and collapse
• safety factor for tension is 1.7
• The casing string must consist of two different sections with the optimum section
discrimination depth is found to be at 1950 ft
• mud weight set in is 9.2 ppg
• formation water gradient is 0.47 psi/ft
• gas kick gradient is 0.12 psi/ft
• Fracture Gradient (FG) = 14.0 ppg
• minimum drift is 8.50 in
• Safety Factor (SF) = 1.0 @ injection pressure

Solution:
1. Injection Pressure = (F.G + S.F) (S.D) (0.052)
= (14.0 + 1.0) (3250) (0.052)
= 2535 psi
2. Surface Pressure = Injection Pressure – gas hydrostatic pressure
= 2535 – (0.12psi/ft) (3250)
= 2145 psi
3. Plot the burst and collapse designs
a) Back-up Line = Formation water gradient x h
pressure @ Top = 0.052 x 9.2 x 3250ft = 1555 psi < Pressure @ Top
pressure @ Bottom = 0.052 x 9.2 x 0 ft = 0 psi < Pressure @ Bottom

b) Resultant line = load – back up

pressure @ Top = surface pressure – surface hydrostatic pressure
= 2145 psi – 0 psi = 2145 psi
pressure @ Bottom = surface pressure – surface hydrostatic pressure
= 2535 – 1555 psi = 980 psi

c) Burst Design Line

pressure @ Top = 2145 psi x 1.1 = 2359.5 psi
pressure @ Bottom = 980 psi x 1.1 = 1078 psi

d) Collapse Design = 1555 x 1.1

= 1711 psi

4. Plot the tension design

W = 36 lb/ft x (3250)
= 117000lbs > 117 Klbs

BF = - (mud hydrostatic pressure) (pipe area)

= - (0.052 x 9.2 x 3250) [pi/4 x (9.6252 – 8.9212 )]
= - (1554.8) (10.25)
= - 16 Klbs

With safety factor

Tension @ 3250 ft = - 16Klbs
Tension @ surface = 117 Klbs – 16Klbs
= 101 Klbs

With safety factor

Tension @ 3250 ft = (16x1.7) – 16Klbs
= 11.2 Klbs
Tension @ surface = 101 x 1.7
= 171.7 Klbs
