Argument Essay: Gay Marriage Should Be Legalized

The document argues that same-sex marriage should be legalized in the Philippines. It discusses how same-sex marriage is currently illegal and dismissed by courts despite growing support. Religious arguments are often used against it, but religious beliefs should not limit others' rights. Legalizing same-sex marriage would allow LGBTQ+ couples to marry in their home country instead of abroad, and enjoy legal protections like property sharing and medical decision-making. It would also make adoption easier for qualified same-sex couples who want to provide loving homes to children in need. Overall, the document argues that prohibiting same-sex marriage limits human rights, and that people should be able to legally marry and form families regardless of gender or sexuality.

Argument Essay

Gay Marriage should be legalized

Same-sex marriage is not legalized in Philippines. The on-going call on legalizing same-sex
marriage has already been dismissed by the country’s highest court. I specifically chose to
discuss this topic because it is still considered taboo for many countries, most especially in
Philippines. The existing argument to same-sex marriage are mainly rooted to religion; where
people who disagree with this act often uses the same argument of their own religious beliefs.
Beliefs that deserves to be respected, but should never be used as a tool to hinder someone from
legal marriage. They strongly hold onto their belief that marriage should only be performed by
two opposite genders, to which is plain unfair for those who wants to marry their same sex
and/or those that doesn’t align their gender with their biological sex. Others who are also not in
favour but doesn’t affiliate themselves with religion are just simply taking satisfaction from
throwing hate on the community. On the contrary, due to the booming voices of the people that
are part of the community and that supports it, a lot of people are becoming more open to this
topic and have been making extra effort to educate others about it.

To start, I am all in favour of same-sex marriage. I believe that everyone should be able to
legally marry whoever they love, regardless of; gender, race, and sex. I have a sister who is also
in support with the LGBTQ+’s fight for rights and has been very vocal about it. I have
neighbours who are also part of the community. I may not face the same struggles as them but
I’ve heard stories of the struggles they face in the society every day. The LGBTQ+ has been long
oppressed and looked down upon. They’ve been deprived of jobs, rejected by their own family,
and even their right to legally marry has been taken away from them. Those who plan to marry
their partner of the same gender doesn’t have a choice but to plan a wedding in a country where
same-sex marriage is allowed and would cost a sum of money— which a large part of the
community can’t afford. Considering that the Philippines is a third world country where wages
are low, an out-of-country wedding is not an option for a lot. This is the reason why marriage of
the same gender should be legalized. No one deserves to go through the stress of worrying about
going to another country to get married, when they can legally marry in their own homeland.

For some, the process of tying knots with the person they love is enough. It’s the experience
that are beyond words. The euphoric feeling of exchanging vows and wearing the ring that
signifies their love is incomparable. While for others, it’s the privileges they get from being
legally married. I’m pretty sure that majority of these couples want both. They continue to fight
for their right to benefit from the laws existing under legal marriage. Even if they decide to
marry in another country, it still wouldn’t be recognized in their country if same-sex marriage
isn’t legalized. It is understandable that beliefs that have existed for ages and have been practiced
by different religions, just like marriage, aren’t to be changed—which is why some have been
suggesting to call it civil-union instead. They don’t have to be married under religion. They will
be married under the law. Civil-union would grant them the same benefits and entitlement of
married couples. They will be able to share properties, get the same protection, entitled to make
medical decisions for their spouse in case of emergency, and most importantly; it will be easier
for them to legally adopt. Most same-sex couples either choose to adopt or opt for a surrogate. It
is difficult for LGBTQ+ couples to adopt because the law only favours to married couples or
single parents. Having kids is an important matter to a lot of domestic couples. The right for
adoption shouldn’t be deprived of anyone unless they are incapable and unqualified to raise
children. There are thousands of children in adoption homes, waiting for someone to adopt them.
Dreaming of a family and a house they can call home. A lot of LGBTQ+ couples are willing to
raise them if only the law allows them to. All couples are different. Some may not be ready for
that kind of commitment, but I know for sure that a large number of kind hearted couples from
the community would love raise a child they can call their own with a loving home and a healthy
environment. It’s sad to see children get adopted by undeserving people who run away from their
duties as a parent. Yet those who are capable enough to adopt one doesn’t get a chance to just
because the law forbids them from doing so.

Everyone has a struggle of their own. We live in a world where judgements are inevitable.
What is right for you might be wrong for others. People can debate about what they believe in
for hours, but not this. While beliefs are to be respected, it shouldn’t cost a person’s right. A
person’s right shouldn’t be up for debate. It should be given to them willingly. It’s a human’s
right to be given protection from any form of discrimination. It’s a human’s right to legally
marry. It’s a human’s right to adopt a child if they are incapable of bearing one. It’s a human’s
right to love anyone regardless of their gender and sexuality. No amount of belief should be
enough to dictate a person’s right. So yes, legalize Gay Marriage.
