INSTRUCTION/DISCUSSION:
 [Refer to your book (pages 40-47), read and understand the indicated examples and explanation
about function notation and the Algebra of functions.]

PRACTICE:
A. Refer to your book of Mathematics 8, page 48 for your warm-up practice (letter A).
B. Given f ( x )=x 2 +4 and g ( x )=x+ 3; find the value of the following:

CHAPTER 4: SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES

OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, you will learn to:
 writes the linear equation ax +by=c in the form y=mx+b and vice versa.
 graphs a linear equation given (a) any two points; (b) the x – intercepts and y –
intercepts; (c) the slope and a point on the line.
 describes the graph of a linear equation in terms of its intercepts and slope.

INTRODUCTION/MOTIVATION:
Materials Needed:
1. Pen and Paper
2. Pen and Paper
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Work on the Activity Individually.
2. On the graphing paper, make a rectangular coordinate
system
3. Assign which die will correspond to an x value
and which will correspond to a y value. (In this
case, the red die will correspond to the x value
and the blue die to the y value.)
4. Roll the two dice.
5. mark the point on the x axis where the red die
landed, similarly mark the point on the y axis
where the blue die landed.
6. Connect the two points to make a line
7. Do steps 3 to 5 four more times with different
color of pens.

Example 1: Study the graph of .

What can you say about the two points used to graph the line? How do you think are these points
obtained?

INSTRUCTION/DISCUSSION:

Learn about It!

A linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product
of a constant and (the first power of) a single variable.
These may be expressed in the following forms:
a. Standard form: Ax+ By+C=0, where,
−C
i. The x−¿intercept is ( , 0) .
A
C
ii. The y−¿intercept is (0 ,− ).
B
−A
iii. The slope of the line is .
B
b. Slope intercept form: y=mx+b, where, m is the slope and (0 , b) is the y−¿intercept.
y 2− y 1
c. Two point form: y− y1 = (x−x 1), where ( x 1 , y 1 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 ) are two different points on
x2− x1
the line.
d. Point slope form: y− y1 =m( x−x 1), where m is the slope of the line and ( x 1 , y 1 )
x y
e. Intercept form: + =1, where (a , 0) is the x−¿intercept and (0 , b) is the y−¿intercepts.

Example 2: Sketch the graph of using its intercepts.

Solution:

Step 1: Find the x-intercept.

Let .

The x-intercept is 8. Its coordinates are (8, 0).

Step 2: Find the y-intercept.
Let .

The y-intercept is −2. Its coordinates are (0, −2).

Step 3: Plot the intercepts and connect them to graph the line.
