PRAYER BEFORE THE STUDY

Lord, true source of light and wisdom, give me a

keen sense of understanding, a retentive memory and the
capacity to grasp things correctly. Grant me the grace to
be accurate in my expositions and the skills to express
myself with thoroughness and clarity. Be with me at the
start of my work, guide its progress and bring it to
completion. Grant this through Christ, our Lord Amen.

I have the Question, who has the Answer?

6 x 5 = 30 30 ÷ 5 = 6
7 x 6 = 42 42 ÷ 6 = 7
9 x 8 = 72 72 ÷ 8 = 9

What are the numbers divisible by 20?

Review:
Factor-a number or algebraic expression that divides another number or
expression evenly, with no remainder.
Factors of 12= 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 ,12 20=1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20

GCF (Greatest Common Factor)-is a term used to describe the biggest number
that can divide evenly into two or more numbers. Sometimes, this is also referred
to as the greatest common divisor (GCD) or highest common factor (HCF).

Polynomial - an algebraic expression with several terms.
Usually, polynomials have more than one term. Each term can
be a variable, a number or some combination of variables and
numbers.
Term – can be a constant or a variable or both in an
expression.
Coefficient – is a number or any symbol representing a
constant value that is multiplied by the variable of a single
term or the terms of a polynomial.
Variables – a symbol (usually a letter) standing in for an
unknown numerical value in an equation.
Constant – a constant is a number on its own, or sometimes a
letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number.

METHODS OF FACTORING
POLYNOMIALS
1. Taking Out Common factors
Consider the polynomial 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑐.
Step 1: The factors of 𝑎𝑏 are 𝒂 and 𝒃.
Step 2: The factors of 𝑎𝑐 are 𝒂 and 𝒄.
Step 3: 𝑎𝑏 and 𝑎𝑐 have the same factor 𝒂.
Step 4: Hence, 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑎𝑐 = 𝑎 𝒃 + 𝒄 .

Examples:
Step 1: The factors of 𝑎𝑏 are 𝒂 and 𝒃.
Step 2: The factors of 𝑎𝑐 are 𝒂 and 𝒄.

1. x3yz4
2. x2y2z6

23/08/2022 8
Examples: Step 3: 𝑎𝑏 and 𝑎𝑐 have the same factor 𝒂.
Step 4: Hence, 𝑎𝑏+𝑎𝑐=𝑎(𝒃+𝒄).

a. 3𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 3 (x + y) 𝟑 is the common factor of 3𝑥 and 3𝑦.

b. −4𝑥 − 5𝑥𝑦 = -x (4 + 5y) −𝒙 is the common factor of

−4𝑥 and −5𝑥𝑦.
c. 6𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 = 𝟑𝒙(2 + 𝑥) 𝟑𝒙 is the common factor of 6𝑥 and 3𝑥 2 .

This GCF is factored out and multiplied to the remaining terms in the
expression.

The process of writing a polynomial by
factoring out a monomial factor common to all
the terms is called common monomial
factoring. If each of the factors cannot be
factored any further, then we say that the
polynomial is factored completely.

Some factors have common factors that have more than one term. In some cases, a
common factor may be a binomial, a trinomial, or a polynomial. But regardless of its form,
this common factor is factored out from the expression and the remaining factors may be
combined.
Ex.
1. 2b (x + 3) – 5 (x + 3) 2. (mn + 1)(y – 2) + (n – 1)(y – 2)
Factor out x + 3 Factor out y-2
(x + 3) (2b – 5) (y – 2) [(mn + 1) + n – 1)]
(y – 2) (mn + n)
Try! Factor out n.
3y (x + 7) – 2 (x + 7) (y -2) n(m+ 1) or n(y – 2) (m + 1)
Try!
(c – 2)(w + 1) + (2c – 3)(w + 1)

3. d( a + b – c) + 6(a + b – c)

Factor out a + b – c

(a + b – c) (d + 6)

8w (ax – by + cz) – 8(ax – by +cz)

There are instances when the terms of the polynomial are not grouped in
parentheses. When factoring this kind of polynomial, the terms with common
factors are grouped together so that the common factors in each group can be
factored out. This process is called factoring by grouping.

Steps:
1. Group the first and last two terms of the expression such that each
group has a common factor.
2. Factor each group.
3. Factor out the common binomial.

2. Factor each group.
3. Factor out the common binomial.

Ex.
Factor the following.
1. ab + ac + 3b + 3c = (ab +ac) + (3b + 3c) Associative property
= a(b +c) + 3(b + c) Common monomial factoring

Examples:
The area of a rectangular land is bh +3h -2b - 6 𝑚2 .
a. What are the dimensions of the land?
b. If b = 37 m and h = 32 m, what is the area of the land?

a. bh +3h -2b - 6 b. Given: b = 37m and h = 32m

= (bh + 3h) + (-2b - 6) = (h-2) (b + 3)
= h(b + 3) - 2(b + 3) = (32-2) (37 + 3)
= (h-2) (b + 3) = (30) (40)
= 1 200 𝑚2

DOMINICAN BLESSING

May God the Father bless us, may God the Son heal
us, may God the Holy Spirit enlighten us and give us eyes
to see with ears to hear with, hands to do the work of God
with, feet to walk with, and mouth to preach the word of
salvation with, and may the angel of peace watch over us
and lead us at least to the Lord’s gift of the kingdom.
Amen.
