CHEE2001 2020 Tutorial Week 10

Mass and Energy Balances with Reaction

1. Introduction to heats of reaction

1.1 Consider the reaction 2A -> B. If the ΔHro = -40 kJ/mol:

a) what is the value of the ratio kJ/mol A reacted?
b) is the reaction exothermic or endothermic at 25 ̊C and 1 atm?
c) If the reactor is adiabatic (Q =0), would the products leave the reactor at a higher
or lower temperature than the entering reactants?

1.2 Consider the following reactions

C6H14(l) + 19/2 O2(g) -> 6 CO2(g) + 7 H2O(l): ΔHro = -4 163 kJ/mol
C6H14(g) + 19/2 O2(g) -> 6 CO2(g) + 7 H2O(l): ΔHro = -4 195 kJ/mol

The standard states of reaction are 25 ̊C and 1 atm. What is the physical significance
of the difference between the two values of ΔHro ?

2. Heats of reaction from heats of formation

Using heats of formation, calculate the standard heat of reaction (25 C̊ and 1atm) in
kJ/mol for the following reactions.
a) CH4(g) + 2O2(g) -> CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
b) 2CH4(g) + 4O2(g) -> 2CO2(g) + 4H2O(g)
c) CH4(g) + 2O2(g) -> CO2(g) + 2H2O(l)
d) Explain the difference in value between a) and c)
e) These heats of reaction are expressed as specific values (energy/mol). How do you
determine the total heat generated in a process?

3. Methane-fired boiler
A methane-fired boiler creates steam for use in a process plant.
50 mol/s of methane enters the boiler at 25 ˚C and burns with 50% excess air preheated
at 150 ˚C. The hot gases from the combustion chamber then pass through a heat
exchanger to generate 10 bar saturated steam from process water.
a) Determine the heat content of the boiler combustion gases leaving the combustion
chamber in MW (assume that the boiler operates adiabatically),
b) Assuming that 75% of the heat in the combustion gases is recovered to generate
steam, calculate the amount of 10 bar saturated steam (kg/s) that is produced.
Assume an inlet process water temperature of 30 ˚C.

Show the full systematic method
