Cuban Revolution overthrew the government of Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959.

The revolution’s leader, Fidel Castro went on to rule Cuba from 1959 to 2008. With that,
Cuban’s government’s illiteracy campaign was an early example of mobilization—the revolution
hitting the ground running. Increasingly, Cuban education was geared around the needs of state.
As Cuba became officially socialist, children followed the Marxist maxim of combining work
and study.

Fidel’s vision for education was that the revolution would be built during practical work-
not in university classrooms. He saw education having an important vote in consolidating his
revolution. Education became universal--- but Castro also stated that anyone who received this
education must actively promote government policies both during and after schooling. They
required taking government-approved courses that didn’t tolerate any criticism of socialism as a
way of life. In other words, education was seen as key to the revolution talking hold and creating
educated population loyal to the government.
